Principal Research Scientist (Managing) for Fusion Digital Engineering and Theory

Overview

The Principal Research Scientist (Managing) will build and lead a team that develops computational tools and workflows for engineering design and optimization of fusion reactors and facilities needed on the path to a Fusion Pilot Plant (FPP). The Principal Research Scientist (Managing) will also deploy and use those tools in collaboration with fusion industry partners. The Principal Research Scientist (Managing) is expected to exploit the expertise and state-of-the-art models developed by the PPPL Theory Department, and to use of the most recent computational advances, such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML). The Principal Research Scientist (Managing) will provide scientific and technical leadership to advance integrated design and optimization capabilities that enable economically viable solutions aligned with long-term mission objectives, system performance, and operational sustainability helping to achieve physics objectives such as improved confinement of thermal and energetic particles, macrostability, and controlled exhaust of heat and particles. The research conducted by the Principal Research Scientist will guide the evolution, improvement and validation of existing models for fusion energy plasmas and materials, and will help determine when new models must be developed and validated.
