At the Hubrecht Institute, we are looking for a careful, motivated animal caretaker who wants to contribute to the welfare of both aquatic species and rodents. You work in an inspiring research environment, where health, disease, and regeneration are central.

What will you do?

  • You daily care for various laboratory animals, with an emphasis on aquatic species such as zebrafish, axolotls, and South African clawed frogs.
  • You ensure feeding, clean water, and optimal housing conditions.
  • You monitor the animals' welfare and record this in welfare diaries.
  • You monitor water quality, temperature, humidity, and other important environmental parameters.
  • You clean and disinfect enclosures, equipment, and workspaces according to applicable hygiene regulations.
  • You perform simple biotechnological procedures, such as weighing, ear tagging, and administrations.
  • You work closely with colleagues and researchers and report any abnormalities in time.
  • You participate in the weekend schedule (about once a month on Saturday and Sunday), for which you receive both financial compensation and compensatory time.

Requirements

  • A completed MBO education in (laboratory) animal care or a comparable field.
  • Possession of an article 13f2 certificate or willingness to obtain it.
  • Affinity with both aquatic animal species and rodents.
  • You work accurately, hygienically, and have an eye for detail.
  • You value order and cleanliness and think it is important to dot the i's and cross the t's.
  • You are eager to learn, collegial, and contribute to a pleasant and professional work atmosphere.
  • You can function both independently and in a team.

Terms of employment

Employment contract for a fixed term: 1 year (permanent after positive evaluation). The salary is, depending on education and experience, at least €3,004 and at most €3,465 gross per month for a full-time position (scale 5 CAO Dutch Universities/KNAW). This excludes 8% holiday pay, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, travel allowance, internet and home working allowance, and pension accrual with ABP. The KNAW offers its employees an excellent package of secondary employment conditions that cater to the various needs of employees depending on their life stage, lifestyle, or career ambitions. For example, it is possible to expand the number of vacation days from 29 to 41 per year (for a full-time position) by working an extra two hours per week. Employer

The Hubrecht Institute is a research institute focused on developmental and stem cell biology. More than 20 research groups at the institute conduct fundamental and multidisciplinary research, both in healthy systems and in disease models. The Hubrecht Institute is part of the KNAW and is located at Utrecht Science Park, 'de Uithof'. Since 2008, the institute has been affiliated with the University Medical Center Utrecht to promote the translation of research to the clinic. The Hubrecht Institute has a partnership with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).
