Job Summary
The professional advisor is responsible for advising students in the specifics of a Lindenwood University degree, as well as providing advice on career options and continued educational studies.
Essential Job Functions and Performance Indicators
Job Responsibilities and Execution
- Assists students in their growth and development by constructing applicable educational plans consistent with their abilities and interests
- Arranges schedules and recommends courses for students
- Determines, based upon prerequisites and degree program requirements, the adequacy of students’ academic progression
- Maintains knowledge of university policies and how student issues may affect their standing; conveys to students the implications of known performance deficiencies
- Conducts student appointments to plan for the coming semester and to review/revise long-range academic program schedules
- Directs students towards self-help tools and services
- Monitors student schedules and keeps appropriate personnel informed of progress within planned program
- Provides mentoring and direction on career options, graduate school or general university questions and issues
- Refers students to institutional resources when academic, behavioral, attendance or other personal problems require intervention
- Participates in the assessment process and recommends action for improvement based on data and student success and persistence
- Utilizes the retention management system for student communication and early intervention
Service Excellence
- Supports the mission of the University and serves as an ambassador of the Q2 culture of service excellence
- Models, supports, and holds others accountable to the University’s values
- Proactively contacts and is available for student advisees on a regular basis
Communication, Teamwork and Collaboration
- Assists in the training/orientation of faculty regarding student advising duties and procedures
- Consults regularly with faculty throughout students’ program progression
- Interprets and provides rationale for institutional policies, procedures and requirements
- Collaborates with admissions related to new student and advising events
- Coordinates continuing enrollment efforts and student persistence with Student and Academic Support Services
- Shares student cohort, risk, and retention data along with advising best practices with college faculty

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Master’s degree preferred
- Prior advising and/or higher education experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to effectively preserve confidentiality and exercise discretion
- Ability to quickly form rapport with both students and co-workers
- Knowledge of student advising processes and applicable course catalogs
- Computer literacy and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Knowledge of and/or willingness to learn and use process improvement methodologies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent customer service skills
Work Environment
- General office setting
- Occasional evening and weekend work possible
- Occasional travel between St. Charles and extension sites
- Non-Standard Flex
Physical Abilities
- Ability to work effectively at a computer for up to eight hours daily
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time
- Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function
