Professional Advisor
General Purpose
The Professional Advisor provides guidance and support to students in achieving their academic and career goals. This role involves helping students navigate course selection, academic policies, and degree requirements while promoting student success and retention. The advisor collaborates with faculty, staff, and other support services to ensure a seamless academic experience for students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Advise undergraduate students on course selection, degree planning, and academic requirements. Assist students in developing individualized academic plans aligned with their personal and professional goals. Monitor student progress through degree audits, ensuring compliance with university policies and deadlines.
- Provide resources and support for students facing academic or personal challenges. Identify at-risk students and implement strategies to promote academic success and retention. Refer students to appropriate campus resources (e.g., tutoring, counseling, career services).
- Educate students about university policies, academic procedures, compliance regulations and guidelines, and graduation requirements. Utilize social media, contest, events, etc., to engage students and keep them informed.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to remain up to date on curriculum changes, program updates, and institutional initiatives. Maintain accurate records of student interactions and academic plans in advising systems.
- Participate in department meetings, training, and professional development opportunities. Collaborate with other academic advisors, faculty members, and administrators to support institutional goals. Contribute to orientation programs, workshops, and advising events to engage current and prospective students.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree (Higher Education, Student Development, Counseling or related field)
- Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word)
- 1-3 years of work-related experience
