Job Description

Job Summary:

The Davis Center’s Program on Central Asia has been awarded a sponsored grant from the Museum of Archeology of RSE Gylym Ordasy, in Kazakhstan. This international collaboration on Kazakhstan’s manuscript heritage includes research, training, and scholarly exchange activities with Kazakhstani partners to advance preservation, digitization, and codicological study initiatives. The Project Coordinator will be charged with logistical planning and implementation of project activities, which includes workshops to be held in Cambridge, Kazakhstan, and remotely; and scholarships and academic exchanges for U.S. and non-U.S.-based students and scholars to research and study in Kazakhstan. The project is directed by Nargis Kassenova, Research Associate and Director of the Program on Central Asia. The Davis Center’s Associate Director will provide oversight of the project and will supervise the coordinator position.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

The Coordinator will primarily be executing and implementing on plans and strategies determined by the project director in consultation with other project partners. Project partners include faculty, librarians, and others from Kazakh universities and institutions, including libraries, many of which are directly connected to the Kazakh government.

The Coordinator plays a key role in organizing the logistics of project activities:

  • Organize and coordinate capacity building project activities, approximately 20 meetings, workshops, and conferences, including scheduling, travel, and logistical arrangements.
  • Organize and coordinate academic exchanges, including travel and visa arrangements for visiting scholars and interns. Support the preparation of consultant contracts and scholarship agreements.
  • Manage project expenses in accordance with established budget. Monitor budget expenditures and maintain accurate financial and administrative records.
  • Serve as the primary contact for communication with project partners, participants, and consultants. Liaise with Harvard Library staff, faculty affiliates, and IT collaborators on digitization and metadata initiatives.
  • General project support: maintain project calendars and track deliverables, deadlines, and milestones; assist in preparing reports for Harvard and consortium partners; provide general administrative support to the project team as needed.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a term appointment through December 31, 2027.
  • Hybrid role: in-person 3-4 days per week; may occasionally be 5 days.

Physical Requirements: Light lifting for in-person events.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

Three or more years of related experience. Education beyond high school may count towards experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • College degree preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with both PC and Mac systems.
  • Working knowledge of Russian and knowledge of the broader Eurasian region, highly desired.

Additional Information

  • Appointment End Date: 12/31/27
  • Standard Hours/Schedule: 28 hours per week; occasional evenings or early-morning meetings may be required to coordinate with international partners and the implementation of project activities. May involve limited domestic or international travel in connection with project activities.
  • Compensation Range/Rate: Compensation is based on the position and the candidate’s relevant experience.

Work Format Details

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
