Department Summary

The UCLA Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) Program is dedicated to promoting worker health, safety, and wellbeing, and building capacity for workers and worker organizations to take action to improve working conditions. LOSH offers high-quality training and education, participatory action research, policy analysis, and worker leadership development to advance worker rights and protections. LOSH is a unit of both the Institute for Research and Labor and Employment (IRLE) and the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH).

Position Summary

The UCLA Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) Program is dedicated to promoting worker health, safety, and wellbeing, and building capacity for workers and worker organizations to take action to improve working conditions. LOSH offers high-quality training and education, participatory action research, policy analysis, and worker leadership development to advance worker rights and protections. LOSH is a unit of both the Institute for Research and Labor and Employment (IRLE) and the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH).

The LOSH Project Coordinator oversees LOSH training initiatives designed to promote hazard awareness, injury and illness prevention, skills building, and leadership development among workers in Southern California. The Project Coordinator supports training and program development efforts under LOSH's Worker Occupational Safety and Health Training and Education Program (WOSHTEP) and other statewide initiatives for both English- and Spanish-speaking audiences, with a particular emphasis on the role that labor unions and the labor movement play in promoting safe and just work. The Project Coordinator is responsible for various facets of assigned projects, conducts outreach, facilitates meetings and communications between project partners, contributes to development of curricula and materials, convenes worker training sessions (in-person and online), provides follow-up support and assistance to training participants, and supports program evaluation activities. The Project Coordinator leads and co-facilitates trainings in English and Spanish and supports a network of training participants through ongoing outreach, technical assistance, and engagement. They work in close collaboration with other LOSH staff, subject-matter experts, partner organizations (labor unions, worker centers, and community-based organizations) and government agency representatives to carry out assigned tasks.

*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications

  • Experience developing curricula, educational materials, and/or training activities using adult education and/or popular education approaches. (Required)
  • Experience collaborating with diverse partners from labor, community-based organizations, government agencies, and academia (Required)
  • Working knowledge of occupational safety and health principles and policies, including the role of labor unions in promoting safe and just work. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to plan projects, develop work plans and timelines, and ensure completion of work plan satisfactorily within timeframe agreed upon with supervisor. (Required)
  • Ability to synthesize and communicate technical, scientific, and/or policy information for lay audiences. (Required)
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of work. (Required)
  • Skill in diagnosing and troubleshooting problems, recommending or implementing solutions and following through to completion. (Required)
  • Ability to work independently to complete tasks with minimal oversight. (Required)
  • Ability to write concise, logical, grammatically correct reports, routine business correspondences and public-facing materials. (Required)
  • Possess a valid California driver's license in good standing with access to a car for local travel and available for occasional evening and weekend activities as determined by operational needs. (Required)
  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Master's Degree In public health, labor studies, or related field (Required) Or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience (Required)
  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
