Project Manager

Project Manager

Location: Division of Structural Biology, Building for Genomic Medicine, Roosevelt Drive, Oxford, OX3 7BN

The Nuffield Department of Medicine is seeking an experienced and highly organised Project Manager to support a CEPI-funded research programme within Professor Thomas Bowden’s group at the Division of Structural Biology (STRUBI). The group studies viral glycoprotein–antibody interactions, combining advanced structural biology methodologies including cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography, biophysical assays, and cell-based studies. You will join a lively and interdisciplinary team, helping to ensure the smooth running and successful delivery of multiple complex scientific projects, while supporting collaborations across national and international partners.

You will provide strategic project direction, ensuring objectives, milestones, and deliverables are clearly defined and communicated across the team. You will manage detailed project planning, monitor progress, coordinate resources, and identify and mitigate risks to keep the programme on track. Working closely with Professional Services teams, you will support budget monitoring, reporting to funders, recruitment processes, and compliance with ethical, contractual, and data protection requirements. You will coordinate meetings with collaborators and funders, manage scientific communications, prepare agendas and minutes, and support the preparation of future funding proposals. As the central point of contact, you will play a key role in ensuring smooth communication, efficient operations, and effective delivery across this high-impact research programme.

You will be educated to postgraduate level in a relevant research field—such as structural biology, immunology, virology, or vaccinology—or hold an undergraduate degree with substantial relevant experience. You must have significant experience in project management, with a proven ability to deliver multiple concurrent projects on time and within budget, alongside strong analytical skills for identifying risks and resolving issues. You will be confident making informed decisions under pressure, highly organised, and able to work proactively with minimal supervision. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, including the ability to convey complex scientific information clearly.

You will have strong interpersonal skills, experience working effectively in cross-functional teams, good IT skills (particularly Microsoft Office), and a demonstrated ability to contribute to improved ways of working. Experience with university grant administration, preclinical trial management, or formal project management qualifications (e.g. PRINCE2) would be advantageous.

Applications for this vacancy should be made online and you will need to upload a supporting statement and CV. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience. Please restrict your documentation to your CV and supporting statement only. Any other documents will be requested at a later date.
