Projects and Exhibitions Assistant Technician

About the role

Working within the Projects and Exhibitions Technical Team and under the line management of the Projects and Exhibitions Technical Manager, you will provide support to the team in the preparation and installation of exhibitions, projects, loans and Museum permanent displays. These duties will include object handling and installation, picture framing, Museum lighting and assisting the Museum mount-maker. The Projects and Exhibitions Technical Team are a highly motivated team where the ability to work flexibly to tight deadlines and as part of a team is essential.

You will contribute to the preparation, installation, and movement of collections, both within the Museum and to off-site storage, ensuring the highest standards of care and presentation.

This is a full-time post, working 36.5 hours per week.

This role involves regular manual handling, including lifting, carrying, and moving objects, and working at height using appropriate equipment.

Due to the nature of this post, the successful candidate will be required to undertake a satisfactory Basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check due to packing works in a high security area of the museum.

Please note that the postholder is required to have a Known Consignor status which involves a satisfactory basic DBS check and a full 5-year referencing.

About You

You will have a demonstrable interest in museums and museum collections, along with an understanding of the care and handling of fragile or valuable objects. You will bring practical technical skills and be confident undertaking physical work.

You will be able to solve practical problems effectively and adapt to changing priorities, demonstrating flexibility and resilience when working to deadlines.

You will be a strong team player with the ability to work independently when required, and you will communicate clearly and professionally with colleagues across the Museum. You will also have basic IT skills, including experience of Microsoft Office applications such as Word.

A full UK driving licence and museum or gallery technical experience are desirable. Experience working with collections or within a museum environment would be advantageous.
