Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION
Teach assigned lecture and clinical courses in the psychiatric technology program in a manner consistent with the department’s standards and with the content cited in the approved course outline and plan of instruction, to a diverse student population.

Acquire and maintain education and skills necessary for competency to teach any course in psychiatric technology.

Teach, supervise and evaluate students in theory and clinical settings; serve as the liaison with professionals in the clinical setting.

Remain current in the subject matter areas and in the techniques of effective instruction through clinical experience, professional development and application of technology to education.
Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.

Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.

Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.

Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings.

Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.

Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.

Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.

Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students. Work cooperatively with staff and students.

Evening and/or weekend assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree or higher AND two years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment;

OR

Any associate degree AND six years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment;
OR

Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area.
OR

The equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education, training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.

AND ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

Instructor: An instructor in a psychiatric technician program shall have had or be currently attending a course in teaching and shall meet the requirements of subsection (A) or (B) below:

(A) Registered Nurse
1. Hold or be eligible for a current California active license as a Registered Nurse; and
2. Hold a baccalaureate degree from an approved school; or a valid teaching credential; or have completed a minimum of one year full-time teaching experience in a state approved registered nursing or vocational or practical nursing, or psychiatric technician school within the last five years; or met community college or state university teaching requirements in California; and
3. Have a minimum of 2 years experience as a registered nurse or licensed psychiatric technician within the last 5 years.

(B) Licensed Psychiatric Technician
1. Hold or be eligible for a current active California license as a psychiatric technician; and
2. Hold a baccalaureate degree from an approved school; or a valid teaching credential; or have completed a minimum of one year full-time teaching experience in a state approved registered nursing or vocational or practical nursing, or psychiatric technician school within the last five years; or met community college or state university teaching requirements in California; and
3. Have a minimum of two years experience as a psychiatric technician within the last five years.

AFTER HIRE:
Meet clinical agency requirements for health clearance which includes no restrictions in providing direct patient care.
1. Pass a physical assessment from a MD or NP to perform clinical work.
2. Have a current Health Care Provider Basic Life Support Certification (CPR).
3. Pass a live scan/background check.

Desirable Qualifications

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Teaching experience in higher education.

Ability to incorporate technology into current instructional methods and create alternative learning to meet learning outcomes.

Commitment to quality teaching, motivation of students, student success, and academic and professional excellence, with the goal of reducing equity gaps of racially minoritized groups within Psychiatric Technology.

Demonstrated leadership experience and/or participation in community or professional organizations.

Experience working in a team-teaching environment.

Experience designing alternative learning activities that develop different training outcomes.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Salary Range: $85,541 - $128,379 Annually
