Position Summary

The Public Safety Lieutenant is responsible for the safety of University students, staff and faculty members, visitors, and the University campus and property. The Lieutenant supervises the day-to-day operations of a shift within the patrol division, which includes assigning officers for duty and ensuring the professional appearance and conduct of shift officers. The Lieutenant is part of the supervisory team responsible for optimizing service and efficiency while ensuring adherence to department directives.

Essential Duties

• Responsible for day-to-day operations of a shift of officers providing public safety and shuttle service to the University Community.
• Assigns officers to posts and conducts roll call. Inspects officers to ensure professional appearance and readiness for duty.
• Ensures officers' adherence to department directives, including but not limited to: Providing corrective counseling and discipline up to the written warning level when required; Refering serious violations of directives to the AVP for Public Safety through the chain-of-command; Ensuring proper care of department equipment and assets.
• Reviews, approves and schedules day off requests ensuring adequate shift coverage.
• Documents all activities and incidents.

Secondary Responsibilities

• Conducts annual performance management reviews of officers and sergeant.
• Attends periodic training classes and meetings when required.
• Performs all patrol and dispatch functions when necessary, including but not limited to: Proactive patrol; Responding to calls for service and emergencies; Providing information when requested; Reporting suspicious activity and/or people; Enforcing and reporting violations of University policy; Providing testimony in conduct or court proceedings; Performing fire and life safety checks.
• Contributes to the overall success of Public Safety and the Division of Student Affairs by performing other duties as directed or assigned.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Three years' experience in campus law enforcement, security, military, or other related service industry.
• One year of supervisory experience.
• Valid driver's license and the ability to successfully clear a Motor Vehicle Records check.
• PA Act 235 or 120 certification.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively by telephone, departmental radio, and in person in a group or one-on-one setting.
• Demonstrated ability to write effectively and convey detailed information accurately.
• Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications including electronic mail, Microsoft Word and Excel, and capacity to learn other computer applications easily.
• Excellent administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Must pass required background checks including, but not limited to, criminal history, driving history, reference checks, and pre-employment physical and drug-screen.
• Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of La Salle University.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associates degree or higher from an accredited institution.
• Familiarity with campus law enforcement industry best practices including knowledge of Clery, Title IX, and VAWA.
• Experience working in a 24×7 environment.
• Understanding of the challenges of supporting staff in a 24×7 environment.
• Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations in an urban setting.

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours

• Must be able to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time.
• Must be sufficiently agile to move about crowded areas, climb stairs and inclines, and enter and exit vehicles quickly.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
• Must be able to perform all essential job functions including visual and aural observation with or without reasonable accommodations.

Work Hours:

• Must have the ability to remain on call during off-duty hours.
• Weekend work and working on holidays is required.
• Is considered essential personnel and is required to work during times of closure or service interruption.
• May need to change working hours as requested by supervisor.
