QUT Faculty Business Development Manager: How to Apply

A faculty-level business development role at QUT

Queensland University of Technology has opened applications for a Faculty Business Development Manager, with submissions lodged through the university's NGA.NET careers portal.

The vacancy is a professional staff appointment, not an academic one. It sits inside a faculty, working with research leaders to turn expertise into industry-funded work.

QUT runs two main campuses in Brisbane: Gardens Point in the city centre and Kelvin Grove in the inner north. The university's long-running brand, 'the university for the real world', helps explain why this role exists.

Who the hire affects

Business development managers who currently work in consulting, government relations, industry bodies, or university research offices are the obvious applicants. The role offers a route into a university without taking on teaching responsibilities.

QUT research staff are the internal audience. When a dedicated business development manager owns the pipeline, academics spend less time cold-calling potential partners and more time writing bids and delivering projects.

Queensland industry is also a stakeholder. The manager is expected to be the first point of contact for companies and agencies that want access to the university's research base.

For anyone inside the university, the hire answers a long-standing complaint: partnership work is rarely covered in teaching or research workloads. A named manager shifts that burden out of academic calendars.

What the job title actually means

In a university, 'faculty' refers to the academic division that contains related schools and disciplines. A Faculty Business Development Manager works across that division, not in central marketing.

The title pairs two functions. Business development covers lead generation, account management, pipeline reporting, and revenue. Manager signals that the person carries a portfolio and reports within the faculty's operations structure.

QUT's public posting does not name the exact salary band. That information appears in the full position description on the QUT careers portal, where candidates can also see the classification level under the university's enterprise agreement.

This matters because QUT professional staff pay is tied to classification levels. Two people doing similar work can sit at different levels depending on the scope of the portfolio and whether they supervise staff.

What the work involves

QUT's listing frames the role around industry and government engagement. In practice, that means four recurring tasks: identifying partner organisations, shaping research projects to fit their problems, supporting academics through the bid process, and managing agreements once they are signed.

Some of the work is external. The manager will represent the faculty in meetings with companies, state agencies, sector boards, and industry clusters. Some is internal: coordinating contracts, budgets, ethics requirements, and reporting.

The most credible applicants will have a record of signed partnerships rather than only a list of events or introductions. The application process asks for evidence against selection criteria, and that is where dollar figures and named partners become useful.

One underappreciated part of the role is translation. Researchers often describe capability in terms of methods and publications. Industry buyers ask what problem it solves and what the milestone schedule looks like. The manager sits in the gap between those two conversations.

Candidate checklist

A competitive application will usually include:

  • a CV showing specific industry accounts or research partnerships you have developed
  • a statement that maps your experience to each selection criterion from the position description
  • referees who can speak to commercial outcomes, not just your work ethic
  • a current notice period so the panel knows how quickly you can start

QUT's recruitment is managed through its HR system. You cannot apply by emailing a dean or faculty manager.

If you are coming from industry, spend extra time on the selection criteria around research funding. A panel will want evidence that you understand university approval processes and the slower tempo of government-funded research.

Why QUT, why now

Queensland University of Technology is a major Australian university with campuses in Brisbane. Its branding as the university for the real world reflects a profile built around applied research, industry placements, and partnerships with organisations in health, engineering, data, and business.

From infrastructure maintenance to energy transition and health-service modelling, Queensland-based projects all need research partners, and universities are competing hard for those relationships.

QUT's official website provides campus and faculty information that helps candidates understand the environment before an interview.

The role also lands at a time when Australian universities are paying closer attention to non-government research income. Dedicated business development staff have become a common response, particularly in faculties that want to build longer, repeatable industry relationships rather than one-off consultancies.

How to submit your application

The application link is live on QUT's NGA.NET portal. Candidates should open the full advertisement, download the position description, and check the closing date shown there.

The same role is listed on AcademicJobs, which includes a summary and a direct link to the QUT application page. The AcademicJobs listing is useful for quick comparison, but the QUT form is the only valid application route.

Before starting the form, gather your supporting documents. QUT's system may time out, so drafting long answers separately is an old but reliable move.

Make sure the position description you download is the one for this vacancy. QUT can advertise multiple business development roles at different levels, and selection criteria are not interchangeable.

What happens after you apply

QUT's selection panel will shortlist against the selection criteria. Interviews for roles at this level usually involve a panel of three or four people. The group often includes a faculty executive, a research office representative who handles contracts, a senior manager from another area, and a human resources adviser.

Candidates who reach the second stage may be asked to give a presentation on how they would grow the faculty's industry income. That task tests the same skills the job requires: knowing the university's strengths and knowing which buyer problems match them.

Reference checks tend to happen late, but a panel may contact referees for shortlisted external candidates before interview. Have your referees briefed on the role and ready to speak to partnership results.

A wider staffing shift

QUT's advertisement is part of a broader pattern. Universities once left industry engagement to academic researchers and heads of school. Now they are hiring people whose only job is to develop business.

That changes who gets hired. People with sales, account management, and policy backgrounds are now competing for university roles that did not exist in the same form a decade ago.

For candidates, the message is that commercial experience is becoming visible in university recruitment. For academics, the change means business development is moving from a side responsibility into a named workload.

The job is therefore a professional role with an academic context. The best applicants will show they can read a research proposal closely enough to ask useful questions, without pretending to be researchers themselves.

The most practical move

Start the QUT application only after reading the full position description. Confirm the closing date and, if the role lists a contact officer, ask one focused question about the faculty's current partnership priorities before you commit time to writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

📌What is the Faculty Business Development Manager role at QUT?

It is a professional staff role based in a QUT faculty. The manager develops partnerships between university researchers and industry or government, supports bids for funded projects, and manages a pipeline of commercial opportunities. The full position description clarifies the faculty and classification.

📘Where do I apply for the QUT Faculty Business Development Manager job?

Applications are submitted through QUT's NGA.NET careers portal. The direct link is in the job advertisement, and it is also listed on AcademicJobs.

🧑‍💼Is the Faculty Business Development Manager an academic position?

No. It is a professional staff appointment. The role supports academics but does not require teaching. Previous experience may come from industry, government, consulting, or university research management.

🎓What qualifications does the role require?

The advertisement does not always require a PhD. Candidates should check the selection criteria, but similar QUT professional roles tend to ask for a relevant degree and substantial business development experience.

🤝What does a university business development manager actually do?

The core work is finding organisations that can fund research, shaping projects to solve their problems, supporting academics in writing proposals, and managing the relationship after the contract is signed.

💰What salary can a Faculty Business Development Manager expect at QUT?

QUT has not published a salary figure in the public listing. The full position description, available through the QUT portal, includes the classification level under the university's enterprise agreement. Candidates should read that document before applying.

🏹Who should consider applying?

Business development managers in consulting firms, industry bodies, government agencies, research institutes, and universities are a natural fit. People with commercial account management experience who can read academic research are competitive.

📋What selection criteria are likely to be used?

The full list is in the position description. Typical criteria include partnership development, income generation, stakeholder engagement, contract management, and understanding of university research funding.

🗺️Does the role require relocation to Brisbane?

QUT's advertised role is Brisbane-based. The university's Gardens Point campus is in the city centre and its Kelvin Grove campus is in the inner north. Some hybrid work may be possible, but the role involves face-to-face partnership work.

✅What makes a strong application?

A strong application ties your experience to the specific selection criteria, includes measurable partnership outcomes, and uses named examples. Generic statements about being a good communicator will not stand out.

⏳How long does QUT take to shortlist?

QUT does not publish a fixed shortlisting timeline for this role. University recruitment can take several weeks, especially for senior professional staff positions. Keep an eye on the contact email in the advertisement.

🌐Can I apply if I currently work outside the university sector?

Yes. QUT's posting is open to external candidates, and many business development managers move from industry into universities. Evidence of revenue or partnership success matters more than a university employment history.
