QUT Is Recruiting a School Engagement Officer: What the Role Involves and How to Apply

What the role involves and how to stand out

QUT has a school engagement officer vacancy on its books right now, and for the right candidate it's a rare straight-line path into a university career that actually touches schools, families and communities. If you've spent time in student recruitment, widening participation or secondary school pathways, do not treat this as a generic administration job.

The university is recruiting through its Nga.net application portal under job ID A6A29375-DC8E-4632-920C-B4D5009DC0FF. The advertisement sits alongside other Australian university jobs on AcademicJobs.com. That's the short version. The longer version matters more, because selection panels see a lot of people who want to work in higher education but cannot describe what school engagement actually does.

The work behind the title

A school engagement officer is the person who turns a university's enrolment goals into conversations with guidance officers, Year 11 coordinators, parents and community groups. At QUT, that means school visits, campus events, information sessions and pathway workshops. Some days you'll present to a lecture theatre of high school students. Other days you'll answer emails from a principal who needs a single enrolment pathway explained for one student.

The role goes past event logistics. It is relationship work. The strongest applicants understand Queensland's senior schooling system, know how ATAR eligibility works, and can explain to a parent what a diploma or enabling program actually offers when a straight ATAR pathway won't work. You are often the first person who makes university feel possible.

QUT is a large public university in Brisbane, with campuses at Gardens Point in the centre of the city and Kelvin Grove just north. Its school engagement work matters because the university recruits school leavers, mature-age students and applicants coming through VET and enabling pathways. That breadth creates a role with a lot of moving parts.

Why the position has real scope

Some university jobs are tightly scoped. This one tends not to be, because a school engagement officer sits between several teams: admissions, student recruitment, equity and access, marketing, and individual faculties. You'll deal with external schools and internal academics. That can be uncomfortable if you like a fixed task list, but it's also why people use the role as a springboard into coordinator and management positions.

The job advertisement on QUT's portal sets out the classification, reporting line and travel expectations. Read the closing date there rather than relying on a cached job board, because closing dates change when a university extends a search. Check the advertisement for the contact officer's name; one targeted question about the team's current priorities will tell you more than reading the selection criteria ten times.

What QUT is trying to achieve

Across Australia, university participation has never been a simple function of talent. The Australian Government's access and participation agenda requires universities to work with schools and communities, not just wait for applications. School engagement roles are part of that delivery mechanism.

The National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education has long tracked the gap between students from low socioeconomic areas and their more advantaged peers. Universities like QUT run school programs because aspiration and practical knowledge about university are unevenly distributed. An effective engagement officer changes what students know about their options before the preference deadline, not after it.

That wider context matters when you write your application. You are not applying to run campus tours. You are applying to move enrolment outcomes for students who might otherwise not apply at all. If you can name the schools, communities or student groups you've worked with, do it.

Five things a strong application will show

Based on how Australian universities use school engagement roles, these are the lines that separate a strong application from a generic one:

  • Experience running events for high school groups, parents or teachers, with numbers, feedback or repeat bookings attached.
  • A working knowledge of Queensland senior schooling, including QCAA subjects, ATAR eligibility and vocational options.
  • The ability to speak with principals and Year 12 coordinators without reaching for university jargon.
  • Confidence presenting to 300 students at 8:45 a.m. and then doing accurate data entry, follow-up emails and CRM notes in the afternoon.
  • A clear sense that school engagement feeds enrolment, which is different from good public relations.

The full role, salary range and selection criteria are available on the AcademicJobs.com School Engagement Officer listing. Use that listing to mirror the language from the official advertisement, but don't copy the selection criteria into your pitch. Panels can spot that in seconds.

How to apply without losing a week

Here's the order I'd follow if I were applying this Monday:

  • Download the position description from QUT's application portal and read every essential criterion twice.
  • Highlight the verbs the advertisement uses: coordinate, deliver, build, track, liaise, present.
  • Write a one-page pitch that gives a measurable outcome for each major responsibility, not a list of past duties.
  • Use specific names: the schools you visited, the event you grew, the team you supported, the CRM you used.
  • Get a second reader to check whether every sentence adds a fact the selection panel didn't already know.

Submit through the QUT's official application portal, not through a third-party C.V. drop. Portals have fields for your resume, cover letter or pitch, and questions about eligibility. Complete every field; incomplete sections can look like you didn't read the instructions.

What happens after you click submit

QUT's system will confirm receipt. If the advertisement lists a contact officer, use that channel for one targeted question after you've read the position description, not to ask what the job is. Shortlists move faster when someone inside the university has already done the groundwork on the role's priorities.

One thing to do this week: ring a guidance officer or careers adviser you've worked with and ask what their students actually need at the point of transition. Bring that answer into your application. Then hit the apply button.

Frequently Asked Questions

🎓What is a School Engagement Officer at QUT?

A school engagement officer at QUT is a professional university staff member who builds and maintains relationships with secondary schools, teachers, careers advisers and community groups. The role supports prospective students and their families as they move through subject selection, pathway planning and application decisions.

📅What does the QUT School Engagement Officer do day to day?

Day-to-day work includes delivering presentations in schools, organising campus visits, running workshops for students and parents, liaising with guidance officers, and tracking engagement activity in a customer relationship management system. The balance between presenting, planning and administration shifts depending on the time of year and the QUT recruitment calendar.

📍Where is the role based?

The role is based at QUT in Brisbane, with time likely split between the Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove campuses and off-campus school visits. The official advertisement sets out whether regular travel across Queensland is required.

📋What qualifications are needed?

Most university school engagement roles ask for a relevant degree and/or equivalent experience in education, marketing, community engagement or student services. The QUT position description will list the specific essential criteria, including any requirement for a working with children check or driver licence.

🏫Is teaching experience required?

Teaching experience is not always essential, but experience working with school-aged students is highly valued. Candidates often come from student recruitment, widening participation, tertiary guidance, education support or community program backgrounds.

📊What salary does a school engagement officer earn in Australia?

University professional roles of this type are usually classified under the higher education worker scale. Pay varies by level and institution. The QUT advertisement will show the classification and salary range; do not rely on general estimates because university salary packaging and superannuation differ.

🔗Where can I see the full QUT position description?

The full position description, selection criteria, closing date and contact officer are on QUT's Nga.net recruitment portal. The vacancy is listed under job ID A6A29375-DC8E-4632-920C-B4D5009DC0FF and also appears on the AcademicJobs.com School Engagement Officer listing.

📝How do I apply for the QUT School Engagement Officer role?

Applications go through QUT's official Nga.net application page. You will typically need a resume, a cover letter or written pitch responding to the selection criteria, and answers to any eligibility questions. Submit before the close date shown on the portal.

✍️What should I include in my application?

Focus on named schools, events, student groups and outcomes. Show how you have lifted attendance, improved advice quality, supported under-represented students, or made school partnerships run more smoothly. Avoid copying the selection criteria back in list form.

📞What happens after I submit?

QUT's portal will confirm receipt. Some universities run a shortlisting panel, then phone or video interviews, then a task or presentation. If a contact officer is named, ask one targeted question about the team's priorities rather than asking for information already in the advertisement.

🧭Is school engagement experience outside universities relevant?

Yes. Experience in TAFE, not-for-profit education programs, school-based youth work, local council community programs, or student recruitment in private providers can transfer well. The key is showing that you understand the school-to-further-education transition and can measure your impact.

🎯What makes QUT different from other Brisbane universities on school engagement?

QUT has a strong practical and technology-focused brand, and its school engagement work connects to a broad portfolio of degrees, diplomas and enabling programs. The job advertisement will explain the current team structure and which schools or regions the officer supports.
