Reader/Scribe Support (Part Time)

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

This position plays a key role in ensuring equal access to the educational opportunities for a student with a disability by providing accommodation support and assistance within the classroom environment. This position will join a team of individuals focused on advocacy, service and support of students with disabilities. The Reader/Scribe will work independently under the supervision of Accommodation Services to provide one on one support to a student in the classroom. The ideal individual has well-developed verbal skills and vocabulary, is a strong oral reader with a good command of the English language.

The typical work schedule for this position is Monday - Thursday 8:30 - 10:30 AM. This position is a direct student support position and hours are subject to change with student's schedule.

  • Record answers that are verbally dictated by student

Reader Responsibilities

  • Read assignments or tasks accurately to the student
  • Only read the instructions of the tasks at hand and must not explain or clarify questions
  • Describe visual elements of class content
  • May repeat the instructions of an assignment but only if the student requests to do so
  • May be asked to reread

Scribe Responsibilities:

  • Write accurately, and at a reasonable speed
  • Write a correction if requested to do so
  • Refer any problems in communication
  • Must not give the answer to the student or lead a student to an answer
  • At the student's request, repeat what has been recorded
  • May be asked to record notes, either handwritten or typed.

  • You possess a working knowledge of personal computer and have the ability to learn database software related to working with student data, institutional data, and communication.
  • You aspire to work with people of all backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, as well as cultivate an environment that values differences.

Position involves working in a classroom and/or lab setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.
