Job Description

WBHM's is seeking a local government and communities reporter. This reporter will bring stories to our audience that help explain public policy and show how those decisions impact people living around Birmingham. The ideal candidate would be adept at reporting from city council and commission meetings as well as from neighborhoods where ordinances and laws play out.

To produce original, compelling stories, including breaking news, and to advance WBHM s coverage on issues that impact communities and WBHM s audience. To tell stories on all editorial platforms, including digital and visual media, social networks and podcasts, with the goal of reaching the largest audience with the biggest impact. To keep up with daily news stories, conduct interviews, do research, write and edit content. To collaborate with a team of WBHM editors, reporters and producers, and other editorial partners. This position is required to keep abreast of best practices in the field and remain up to date on current trends and new technologies. This position should anticipate change and ensure the organization is positioned to succeed.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Produces original, compelling stories, including breaking news and advances WBHM's coverage.
  • Identifies investigative projects and original enterprise by cultivating sources, using Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and building databases.
  • Reports and writes original stories that match WBHM's standards for accuracy, fairness and newsworthiness.
  • Tells stories on all editorial platforms, including digital and visual media, social networks and podcasts, with the goal of reaching the largest audience with the biggest impact.
  • Works collaboratively with editors, reporters and producers in WBHM's newsroom and with other editorial partners.
  • Records, gathers and identifies sound elements to produce rich and memorable audio experiences.
  • Meet deadlines, and remains responsive and flexible in the face of the demands of programming and the news cycle.
  • Remains current and anticipates trends on issues that impact communities and WBHM's audience.
  • Fulfills administrative obligations arising from assignments, such as filing prompt, accurate expense records and program information/summaries, and maintaining contact with editors and appropriate producers and keeping them informed about assignments.
  • Represents WBHM in public forums and gatherings as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range

$50,050 - $81,330

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Journalism or a related field and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may substitute for education requirement.
