About the role
We are looking for a Research Assistant to join our team working on next-generation solid-state hydrogen storage materials, contributing to an EPSRC-funded project that supports the UK’s net-zero and clean energy ambitions. The role sits at the interface of materials science, chemical engineering, and hydrogen energy.
The post involves hands-on experimental research, including the preparation, characterisation, and analysis of advanced hydrogen storage materials. You will be expected to be proficient in high-pressure gas adsorption measurements, including the use of IGA-003 and HTP-1 systems, and to work independently with specialist laboratory equipment.
- You will work closely with academic staff and other researchers in a collaborative laboratory environment, supporting the delivery of key project milestones and contributing to high-quality research outputs and publications.
- This role offers the opportunity to develop expertise in a highly specialised and fast-growing research area, with strong links to international collaborations and impact-driven hydrogen research.
- As a member of Research Staff at the University of Bath, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days’ professional development (pro rata) per year.
We are looking for a motivated researcher who is keen to contribute to cutting-edge research in solid-state hydrogen storage. You will bring strong experimental skills, the ability to work independently, and a collaborative approach.
About the candidate
- A PhD (awarded or near completion) in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research experience.
- Demonstrated experience in experimental research on hydrogen-related systems, with data analysis suitable for publication.
- Practical experience in high-pressure gas adsorption measurements, including working knowledge of IGA-003 and/or HTP-1 (or closely related equipment).
- Experience operating in a glovebox environment, including safe handling of air- and moisture-sensitive materials.
- Experience in the synthesis and characterisation of porous materials.
- Strong understanding of laboratory health and safety, risk assessment, and good research practice.
- Ability to work independently, manage experimental work effectively, and meet project deadlines.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with experience contributing to reports, presentations, or academic publications.
