The CLAIR (Clean Air Innovation for Resilience) research project at Carnegie Mellon University is currently advancing the development of an early-stage digital research prototype focused on indoor air quality, materials science, and data-driven decision support. As part of this effort, we are seeking a part-time Research Assistant to support data analysis, software testing, and research documentation activities.
This position will support an established research plan and work closely with the project lead and technical team. The role is designed to provide hands-on experience in applied research and digital prototyping within a university research environment.
In this role, candidates should be capable of working with limited supervision while demonstrating strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks. Candidates should be comfortable following research procedures, documenting work carefully, and collaborating with others in a professional research setting.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain applied research experience in data-driven digital tools while contributing to an active interdisciplinary research project.
Core Responsibilities Include:
- Performing basic data analysis to support research and prototyping activities
- Documenting research processes, methods, and results
- Assisting with testing and evaluation of software or digital prototype components
- Collecting, organizing, and maintaining accurate research data and records
- Supporting background research, including literature reviews and exploratory research
- Assisting with preparation of summaries or internal reports as needed
- Collaborating with project team members to support defined research objectives
- Performing related research duties as assigned

Qualifications:
- Minimum 1 year of relevant experience in research, laboratory work, data analysis, software testing, or a related area required
- Undergraduate or Graduate degree in Materials Science Engineering or similar field preferred
- Background or coursework in materials science, materials engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field
- Familiarity with basic materials characterization techniques (e.g., microscopy, spectroscopy, surface analysis, or mechanical testing) through coursework or research experience
- Exposure to laboratory or prototyping environments involving materials testing, fabrication, or evaluation
- Interest in materials properties, filtration media, or applied computational tools
- A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
You should demonstrate:
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Proficiency with basic computer applications (e.g., spreadsheets, document editing tools)
- Familiarity with Python, AI/ML tools, data analysis tools, or research software is a plus, but not required
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team
- Willingness to follow established research plans, safety protocols, and instructions
Additional Information:
- Hours and Schedule: Normal business hours; evening and weekend work may occasionally be required
- Part-time, up to 20 hours/week
- Location: Pittsburgh, PA (Hybrid)
