Departmental Overview

The Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) is a multidisciplinary research center at UC Berkeley, founded in 2000 to address roadway safety as a critical public health and engineering challenge. Affiliated with both Berkeley Public Health and the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS), SafeTREC collaborates with diverse departments-including City & Regional Planning, Public Policy, and Transportation Engineering-to conduct high-impact transportation safety research, data analysis, and community outreach. SafeTREC's mission is to inform decision-making and empower communities to improve roadway safety for all.

Position Summary

Serves in several roles to enhance the institute's research mission, including independently conducting data analytic projects and research as determined by the Directors, Principal Investigators, and Senior Researchers. The position requires statistical knowledge and abilities to utilize statistical programs in order to perform various data analyses in support of research grants.

Responsibilities

Conducts transportation safety related data analysis

  • Utilize general statistical knowledge in support of research grants.
  • Analyze data using R, Python, STATA or other statistical software, as needed.
  • Perform spatial data analysis using ArcGIS or other geospatial tools.
  • Design and develop dashboards and visual tools to translate findings into tables, charts, and maps.
  • Document analyses performed and share the outcome with other staff.

Assist in preparing reports, presentations, and publications

  • Develop data summary and visualization using tables and charts.
  • Draft a part of manuscripts with directions from the Principal Investigators.
  • Conduct literature searches and reviews.
  • Assist in preparing data and writing a draft for the grant proposals.
  • Draft monthly, quarterly, or yearly progress reports if appropriate.

Research, collect and maintain transportation safety related data

  • Collect relevant transportation safety data.
  • Assist in developing systems for organizing data to analyze, identify and report trends.
  • Review available data and update periodically if needed to make the data up-to-date.
  • Share the summary of the available dataset and recent changes with internal constituents.

Professional development & other duties

  • Participates in workshops, training, and other professional development opportunities.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge in various statistical analysis methods in order to perform data analyses.
  • Proficiency with statistical software such as STATA, R, or related data analysis software to perform processes necessary to examine datasets.
  • Demonstrated strong data analytical skills in order to utilize multiple datasets together.
  • Ability to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Self-motivated and works independently.
  • Demonstrated broad problem-solving skills.
  • Writes clearly and in the appropriate style.
  • Interacts with co-workers appropriately and efficiently.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience of utilizing online charting libraries such as HighCharts, D3, or Google Charts.
  • Experience of analyzing geospatial dataset.
  • Experience of utilizing GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS.
  • Ability to develop and maintain interactive data dashboards using platforms like ArcGIS Dashboards, Tableau, or Microsoft PowerBI.
  • Knowledge of relational database structures and database querying tools.
  • Ability to understand SQL and write SQL queries for the data processing.
  • Master's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $36.00 - $43.00. The full pay scale range for this classification is $35.78 - $63.65.

  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), contract appointment, with an anticipated end date of September 30, 2027.
  • This is a non-exempt, biweekly-paid position.
