La Rochelle Université is recruiting a research assistant on a fixed-term contract for a period of 12 months, renewable once.

Project context
Within the LIENSs laboratory, UMR 7266 CNRS-La Rochelle Université, you will contribute to the acquisition of knowledge and the scientific monitoring of the carbon sink function of the Marais Poitevin Regional Nature Park, through in-situ measurements and monitoring of various marsh habitats (wet, dry, low-water and brackish marshes). You will be responsible for collecting, preparing and analysing samples and data, and will produce reports analysing data from physico-chemical and biological measurements, in collaboration with scientific and technical partners.
Maps of habitats, their distribution and proportions within the Marais Poitevin will be provided by the Regional Nature Park, and the data obtained will be contextualised on these habitat maps. The research officer will be working as part of a European LIFE action research programme on the role of the Marais Poitevin in carbon sequestration.
Job description
1. Preparation and organisation of field surveys
- Plan field trips in coordination with the Regional Nature Park (PNR) teams and scientific partners.
- Prepare sampling equipment (containers, nets) and measuring instruments (sensors, probes).
2. Carrying out measurements and sampling in the field
- Carry out in situ physico-chemical measurements:
- Temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, alkalinity
- Partial pressure of CO₂, CO₂ flux between water and atmosphere
- Measurement of other greenhouse gases (methane)
- Flows/currents
- Carry out biological monitoring:
- Isotopic analyses (food web, biodiversity).
3. Sample management
- Prepare and package samples for analysis and/or dispatch to accredited laboratories
- Ensure the traceability and logistical tracking of consignments.
4. Data processing and reporting
- Format data into monitoring tables (Excel, R).
- Geographical representation of data (QGIS)
- Interpret the results in consultation with scientific partners.
- Drafting activity and summary reports
- Present the results to partners (PNR, scientists, local authorities, etc.)
- Communicating the results to all types of stakeholders.

Education Level: Master Degree or equivalent
Skills/Qualifications
Job profile
With a three- to five-year degree in Environmental Sciences, specialising in geosciences, ecology or equivalent, you have knowledge of wetland ecology and biogeochemistry. Previous experience in a similar field project would be an advantage.
1. Technical knowledge
- Basic understanding of the hydrological and biogeochemical functioning of wetlands.
- Experience in carrying out physico-chemical measurements in aquatic environments.
- Proficiency in environmental sampling protocols (water).
- Skills in mapping, spatial analysis and statistics would be an advantage.
- Understanding of carbon cycles
2. IT skills
- Proficiency in office software (Excel, Word).
- Knowledge of scientific data processing tools (R, etc.).
- Ability to work with environmental databases.
3. Personal qualities
- Scientific rigour and organisational skills.
- Independence and the ability to take the initiative in the field.
- Comfortable working in a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to summarise and present complex data.
4. Specific requirements
- A Category B driving licence is essential (frequent travel within the Marais area).
- Outdoor work, sometimes in variable weather conditions.
