Research Assistant

Research Assistant

Division of Structural Biology, Building for Genomic Medicine, Roosevelt Drive, Oxford, OX3 7BN

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to join Professor Thomas Bowden’s group within the Division of Structural Biology. Funded by CEPI, this exciting role focuses on integrated X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy studies to explore viral glycoprotein–antibody interactions. You will join a dynamic, international team working at the forefront of structural virology, contributing to research that combines recombinant protein technologies, advanced biophysics, and high-resolution structural methods. This is an excellent opportunity to build technical expertise while supporting impactful research into virus–host interactions.

You will manage your own research and administrative activities, preparing high-quality recombinant proteins using bacterial and eukaryotic expression systems, and purifying them using affinity and size-exclusion chromatography. You will carry out quality control, generate samples for cryo-EM and crystallography studies, and contribute to data analysis and presentation in lab meetings, journal clubs, and collaborator discussions. As an integral member of the laboratory, you will help maintain smooth daily operations, including equipment oversight, stock management, and supporting colleagues through inductions, training, and basic operating procedures.

You will hold a first degree in molecular biology, biology, chemistry, biomedical sciences, or a related discipline, alongside practical experience relevant to structural biology. You must have hands-on experience in molecular biology, tissue culture, recombinant protein expression and purification, and be familiar with sample preparation for cryo-EM. You will be confident preparing and presenting scientific data, writing up experimental results, and engaging with literature in the field. A meticulous and responsible approach to laboratory work is essential, including experience working with hazardous chemicals, strong attention to detail, organised record-keeping, and the ability to troubleshoot experimental challenges. You will be proficient in Microsoft Office applications and knowledgeable about laboratory health and safety. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively, managing a varied workload with initiative, is key to success in this role. Supervisory experience, familiarity with laboratory ordering systems, protein structure visualisation tools, or knowledge of immunology/virology would be advantageous.

Applications for this vacancy should be made online and you will need to upload a supporting statement and CV. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience. Please restrict your documentation to your CV and supporting statement only. Any other documents will be requested at a later date.

This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract for 36 months and is funded by CEPI.

Only applications received before 12 midday on 19 January 2026 will be considered. Please quote 182973 on all correspondence.
