Research Assistant

About the role

This role is to support Professor Joe Tomlinson in his work on the Transforming Justice programme, which is led out of the Institute for Fiscal Studies and is funded by a £2.5M grant from the Nuffield Foundation.

The research programme aims to advance economic study of the justice system in England and Wales. Specifically, it advances empirical understanding of the justice system, seeks to influence policy and public understanding relating to the justice system, and builds capacity for quantitative and economic research on the justice system.

This role will be working directly with Professor Tomlinson across his work on the programme, including conducting research, organising capacity-building events, and engaging with policymakers.

This is a full time post, and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 9.5 months starting in Early November. (The start date can be negotiated for the appointed candidate if needs be).

Research staff at King’s are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development. This entitlement, from the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, applies to Postdocs, Research Assistants, Research and Teaching Technicians, Teaching Fellows and AEP equivalent up to and including grade 7. About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. A relevant postgraduate qualification, such as a masters, in law, or equivalent work experience
  2. Experience of carrying out academic research in the context of law and/or justice system
  3. A genuine interest in justice systems
  4. Strong analytical skills
  5. Excellent oral and written communication skills
  6. Ability to produce accurate work, sometimes to tight deadlines

Desirable criteria

  1. Experience working on academic research project (e.g. as a Research Assistant)
  2. Experience engaging with legal professionals, judges, and others working in the justice system

Grade and Salary: £39,076 - £40,733 per annum, including London Weighting Allowance
