Research Associate - Equitable Privacy

The role

This is an open-ended with fixed funding position (with funding confirmed for 12 months) within the Bristol Cyber Security Group. The Group participates in several major initiatives, hosting REPHRAIN, the National Research Centre on Privacy, Harm Reduction and Adversarial Influence Online, leading the programme of work on developing a Cyber Security Body of Knowledge (CyBOK), leading an EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Cyber Security (CDT in Cyber Security) and leading the EPSRC-funded programme on securing convergent ultra-large-scale infrastructures (SCULI). The University also hosts the NCSC Research Institute on Science of Cyber Security (RISCS). There is a strong expectation that you will actively contribute to the strong profile of Cyber Security at Bristol and its interdisciplinary ethos.

What will you be doing?

We are looking for a candidate to work across a number of interdisciplinary projects focused on advancing more equitable approaches to privacy, security, and digital safety, with particular attention to the needs and experiences of marginalized and vulnerable communities. This includes projects that address the specific security, privacy, and safety risks faced by these groups. The post holder will work with the research team to investigate, understand, design, and test interventions in collaboration with a range of community stakeholders. They will also support the delivery of events that bring together academics, community organisations, and other relevant actors to foster inclusive dialogue and knowledge exchange.

This position is well-suited to an individual with a strong commitment to equity and justice in security protections of technology, and a desire to ensure that security, privacy, and safety frameworks are accessible, effective, and empowering for all users.

You should apply if

  • Experience conducting research in areas related to usable security, human factors of security and privacy, or digital safety.
  • Strong understanding of equity and inclusion as they relate to digital technologies, privacy, and security.
  • Experience working with or alongside marginalized and/or vulnerable groups in research, design, or community engagement contexts.
