Research Associate (Fixed Term)

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the research group of Dr. Antoine Hocher in the Department of Genetics, based in central Cambridge. Our lab explores molecular mimicry and chromatin evolution. We combine molecular biology, phylogenetics, proteomics and genetics.

This one year postdoctoral position focuses on studying the evolution and diversity of chromatin in prokaryotes. Across the tree of life, several biochemical and genetic challenges associated with the use of DNA storage are dealt with by chromatin. Broadly speaking, supercoiling management, repression of xenogeneic elements or maintenance of local 3D structure are essential functions to which chromatin contribute. Over the years it has become clear that there is not a unique solution to any of these problems. In stark contrast to eukaryotes which almost always use histones, prokaryotes have repeatedly lost chromatin proteins and evolved -or exchanged- new ones across lineages.

The successful candidate will lead a project aimed at:

  • Studying the diversity of prokaryotic chromatin proteins using phylogenetic and molecular biology
  • Develop molecular biology methods to quantitatively measure the abundance of chromatin-associated proteins
  • Dissecting the mechanisms of action of newly identified chromatin protein

By applying cutting-edge approaches, this work aims to systematically uncover nucleoid-associated proteins. This work has the potential to advance our understanding of chromatin and genome function. This position provides a unique opportunity to develop expertise in diverse high-throughput techniques (proteomics, transcriptomics).

The successful candidate will benefit from the labs combined expertise in wet-lab molecular biology and computational biology. Prior experience in microbiology including yeast, molecular biology and microscopy is advantageous. Computational biology expertise is not required, but the candidate is expected to learn basic phylogenomics. A curious, persevering, and independent mindset is essential.
