About the role:

The Moore laboratory (www.mooresynbio.com), Imperial College London, is looking to recruit a Research Associate with expertise in biochemistry, chemical biology, or a related discipline. The post sits broadly within the area of engineering biology and, more specifically, the development of alternative antimicrobials, including peptide and protein-based biotherapeutics. The post is also in collaboration with the Sutton group at the UK Health Security Agency. The Moore group operates both basic and applied research projects, the latter in partnership with industry. You will therefore work within a diverse team and benefit from extensive interactions with group members specialising in the engineering of heterologous expression systems, encompassing both cell-based and cell-free approaches, biochemistry, and analytical techniques – fostering a collaborative and highly productive research environment.

The post will involve a range of analytical procedures, including techniques such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), high-resolution mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR); experience in any of these techniques would be advantageous. By joining the group, you will not only contribute to high-profile research projects, but will also contribute to grant/publication writing and will have a sense of responsibility to help mentor undergraduate and master’s students when required. In recognition of the fixed-term nature of the contract, Dr Moore will provide additional support towards securing further funding, whether through academic or industry routes, and at request, will provide mentorship for suitable early-career fellowship applications. This post is potentially suited to candidates who are considering a transition towards research independence.

What you would be doing:

You will have a PhD (or equivalent) in biochemistry, chemical biology, ideally with experience in studying and engineering biosynthetic gene clusters. You must have a strong research track record, preferably demonstrated by first-author publications in international journals.

The ability to develop and apply new concepts and have a creative approach to problem-solving, to set and attain research objectives in a multidisciplinary team are also essential.

This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment, for up to 11 months with possibility of extension subject to funding availability.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant.
