Research Associate in dynamic experimentation and modelling of composites for liquid hydrogen fuel tanks
About the role
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Department of Mechanical Engineering, working with Dr Chanel Fallon on the dynamic analysis of cryogenic carbon fibre composites.
This postdoctoral position will develop and apply new experimental and modelling methodologies for the dynamic analysis of composites, suitable for liquid hydrogen fuel tanks in next generation sustainable aviation. Areas of research include:
- Mechanical characterisation of carbon fibre composites, spanning strain rates from quasi-static to high rate (including use of a split-Hopkinson pressure bar).
- Mechanical characterisation of carbon fibre composites, spanning temperatures from room temperature to liquid hydrogen temperature (20K).
- Development of a finite element model of carbon fibre composites to incorporate rate and temperature dependence.
This project will deliver new understanding of material and laminate design for this safety-critical application.
As a member of Research Staff at the University of Bath, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.
This is a full-time (36.5 hours a week), fixed term position for 36 months.
Applicants should possess the following:
- A first degree in an Engineering or Engineering-related subject and a PhD with appropriate content.
- Proven experience of experimentation and FEA modelling.
Experience in some of the following areas will be a distinct advantage:
- Mechanical testing for materials characterisation
- Materials characterisation at cryogenic temperatures
- Experimentation and modelling in dynamic regimes e.g. use of a split-Hopkinson pressure bar
- FEA modelling of composite structures
Candidates should be self-motivated and possess project management and technical communication skills.
Further Information
This role is offered on a full time (36.5 hours per week) fixed term basis with an expected duration of 36 months.
