Research Associate (Smarter Robot Bodies)
About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Department of Mechanical Engineering as a Research Associate to work on the cutting-edge project "New Analytical Framework: Developing Dexterous Manipulators".
Funded by the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) through the groundbreaking Smarter Robot Bodies opportunity space. This project aims to unlock a step-change in robotic capabilities.
You will work in an interdisciplinary team to develop novel analytical frameworks that bridge the gap between soft robotic manipulators and their intelligence.
The project specifically addresses the challenge of "Robot Dexterity" by creating mathematical models and AI-based strategies that allow soft robotic manipulators to achieve human-level dexterity. You will be part of a dynamic team of "Creators" within the ARIA ecosystem, collaborating to transform how soft robots interact with the physical world.
A core focus of this role is using advanced mathematics and data analytics to "see inside" the robot. You will use data to uncover the hidden physics and internal states of complex manipulator bodies, moving beyond black-box approaches to develop transparent, physics-informed models that explain why the robot moves the way it does.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Developing rigorous mathematical models for the complex, non-linear dynamics and underlying physics of soft robotic manipulators.
- Utilising machine learning to interpret sensor data, inferring internal physical states and structural behaviours that are not directly observable.
- Creating data-driven models that bridge the gap between theoretical physics and real-world robot performance.
- Implementing AI control strategies that leverage this deep physical understanding to achieve superior dexterity and adaptability.
- Designing and conducting experiments to validate the new models and findings on physical robotic hardware.
- Collaborating with external partners and other ARIA Creators to integrate hardware and software solutions.
We are looking for a highly motivated researcher with a strong background in AI, Mathematics, and Robotics. You should possess a creative approach to problem-solving and a passion for using data to decode physical reality.
- A PhD (or be close to completion) in Robotics, Control Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Strong expertise in analytical modelling of dynamic systems and physical interactions. Experience in using data analysis to identify system parameters or model physical phenomena.
- Knowledge of soft robotics, continuum robots, or flexible manipulators.
- Excellent programming skills (e.g., Python, C++, MATLAB).
- A strong publication record in reputable journals or conferences.
