Position Highlights

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is accepting application for a Research Engineer under the direction of Dr. Hao Xin.

This project is to study and design a electromagnetic (EM) berm for containing EM interference and leakage across a large area (i.e., 2km x 4km). The involved tasks require build large scale EM simulation models and perform thorough verification. It is a challenging R & D project because of the large and complex environment at Ft. Huachuca. This employee will provide senior-level technical leadership for Phase 1 EMS Berm development, overseeing requirements validation, design integration, and risk management while supervising and mentoring a multidisciplinary team of PhD, MS, and undergraduate researchers as well as possible full-time project staff, ensuring coordinated execution, high-quality technical outputs, and compliance with cost, schedule, and regulatory requirements.

This position is currently funded through 2/28/2027.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States.

The University of Arizona has been recognized for our innovative work-life programs. For more information about working at the University of Arizona and relocations services, please click here

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform technical development of Electromagnetic berm proposed at Ft. Huachuca.
  • The project requires a senior-level engineer with deep expertise in large-scale computational electromagnetics (CEM), terrain-aware modeling, and high-fidelity simulation workflows.
  • The technical scope is non-trivial and involves multiple layers of complexity that cannot be executed by a junior or mid-level developer.
  1. Acquisition and Integration of Real Terrain Data
  2. Development of Large-Scale EM Models in HFSS, SBR+, and Wireless InSite
  3. Numerical Stability, Solver Strategy, and HPC Utilization
  • Provide guidance on simulation model set up and analyzing results. The berm's EM performance must be validated across:
Frequency bands, Soil conditions, Incident angles, Seasonal variations which requires: Parametric sweeps, Uncertainty quantification, Cross-tool consistency checks (HFSS vs. SBR+ vs. Wireless InSite). Verification at this scale is a research-grade task, not a routine simulation.
  • Supervise up to three graduate and undergraduate research assistants, providing technical direction, daily prioritization, and quality control across modeling, simulation, and documentation tasks. Mentor students in advanced electromagnetic concepts, research
methodology, and professional engineering practices to ensure their contributions meet sponsor-grade rigor. Coordinate workload distribution, review deliverables, and develop each student's capabilities so the team operates as a coherent, high-performance research unit.
  • Prepare clear, technically rigorous presentations and reports for potential collaborators and funding agencies, translating complex EM modeling results into accessible insights. Tailor messaging to highlight project impact, methodological credibility, and alignment
with sponsor priorities. Deliver polished materials that support partnership development and strengthen the competitiveness of future proposals.
  • Lead project risk management by identifying technical, schedule, and resource vulnerabilities early and developing mitigation strategies grounded in realistic modeling constraints. Plan subsequent project phases by outlining decision points, dependencies,
and required technical maturation. Support the PI in continuity and readiness for follow-on work (expected to be a multi-million project) through structured documentation and forward-looking execution planning.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong foundation in electromagnetics. Extensive experience in EM simulation and verification.
