Job Profile: Animal Care Technician III

Job Summary:

This position will serve as a resource and leader to other technicians and student employees; collects samples, administers medication and treatments, and performs feeding and maintenance responsibilities to ensure compliance with animal care regulations and in support of research and instruction. To be successful in this position you must also exhibit a positive working attitude, communicate well and develop a good working relationship with co-workers and supervisors and show initiative to see what needs to be done and to get it done.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Leads the day-to-day operational activities of an animal care work unit and facilitates staff training as needed
  • Cleans and maintains organization of animal holding spaces.
  • Observes animal behavior, performs basic animal care, and reports concerns to the appropriate entities to contribute to the health and well-being of animals and promote research.
  • Tracks inventory levels of animal supplies and places replenishment orders
  • Leads the day-to day operational activities of an animal care work unit and facilitates staff training as needed
  • Prepares food and formulas and feeds animals according to established schedules and specifications
  • Maintains organization of and updates records related to work unit procedures
  • Collects samples from animals and administers medications, injections, and treatments according to established protocols and procedures to be used for diagnostic and research
  • Observes animal behavior, performs animal care, and reports concerns to the appropriate entities to contribute to the health and well-being of animals in support of research and instruction
  • Cleans and maintains organization of animal holding spaces
  • Inspects, maintains, and initiates complex repairs to equipment to ensure optimal and safe operation
  • Collects samples from animals and administers medications, injections, and treatments according to established protocols and procedures to be used for diagnostic and research.

Compensation:

The anticipated salary range for this position is $24.00 - $26.00. However, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications. Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of lactating cow ration formulation and ability to recognize changes in cow intake (e.g., identifying reduced feed consumption or signs of digestive upset, etc.).
  • Experience feeding cows in a research setting, including following detailed written protocols and verbal instructions from research staff.
  • Basic computer skills, including using Microsoft Word and Excel to log feed data, send emails, and maintain digital records.
  • Ability to perform daily tasks, such as shoveling refusal feed, lifting feed bags, and operating skid steers, tractors, and utility vehicles in various weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of feed management software (e.g., FeedWatch, EZfeed, etc.) and feed storage practices such as proper silage handling and inventory rotation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with research dairy nutritionists, including discussing feed quality and interpreting feed types (e.g., identifying mold in silage or spoilage in byproducts).
  • Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and maintaining small engines and power-driven carts, such as replacing belts, checking oil levels, or performing basic repairs.
  • Experience with cost tracking or inventory systems, such as entering feed usage into spreadsheets or using digital tools to monitor feed expenses and stock levels.

Education:

H.S. Diploma Preferred
