Job Description:

  • Faculty of Science / School of the Environment
  • Full-time fixed-term position for up to 2 years
  • Base salary will be in the range $114,824.05 - $136,048.73 + 17% Superannuation (Academic Level B)
  • Based at our EcoSciences Precinct, Dutton Park, and/or at the Queensland Herbarium, Toowong.

About This Opportunity

We’re seeking a Research Fellow to join a high-impact University – State Government partnership delivering research that directly supports environmental management, protection and restoration across Queensland. This role offers a unique opportunity to deepen your expertise and research profile in field ecology and remote sensing while contributing to work that informs real-world policy and operational outcomes.

Funded by the Queensland Government’s Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI), you’ll work at the intersection of research and practice. You’ll collaborate closely with leading researchers across the School of the Environment, the Joint Remote Sensing Research Program (JRSRP), and DETSI teams including Queensland Herbarium and Biodiversity Science (QHBS) and Earth Observation and Social Science (EOSS). Your research will be embedded in day-to-day operational activities, ensuring your work delivers tangible environmental impact.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Research: Lead and contribute to spatiotemporal modelling, mapping, and remote sensing research to monitor ecosystem states and transitions, producing high-quality outputs, securing competitive funding, and translating research into practice and impact.
  • Supervision and Researcher Development: Develop supervision capability by mentoring and supervising Alliance partner staff and Honours/HDR students, working with senior colleagues to build researcher skills and manage performance in line with University policies.
  • Citizenship and Service: Demonstrate leadership, collaboration, and alignment with UQ values by supporting Alliance operations, contributing to internal governance and committees, representing UQ in professional forums, and building strong stakeholder networks.

About You

  • Completion of a PhD in ecology, ecological modelling, time series data and/or remote sensing.
  • A growing profile in research in vegetation ecology states and transitions, ecosystem mapping and modelling and ecological dynamics across spatiotemporal scales.
  • A demonstrated a strong statistical background for accuracy assessment and validation of mapping in dynamic landscapes.
  • Demonstrated skills in contemporary computing technologies and data science for managing and processing large data sets and the delivery, reporting and visualisation of data and results.
  • Demonstrated experience in undertaking field work including planning, coordination and supervision of field teams, and working knowledge of associated Workplace Health and Safety principles and requirements.
  • A well-developed or developing publication record demonstrated through experience in the preparation of high-quality reports and/or publications, presentations, and project related documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment to deliver project specific products and activities.
  • Demonstrated skills in project development and delivery to meet project partner requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and communicate with team members, and a range of customers and collaborative partners, and professionally represent the Alliance partners and their interests.
