Research Fellow - Cordell Institute for Policy in Medicine & Law
Position Summary
The Cordell Institute for Policy in Medicine & Law at WashU in St. Louis seeks a full-time legal and policy research fellow for a one-year term. Preference will be given to candidates who will reside in the St. Louis region during the fellowship period.
The Cordell Institute’s mission is to devise solutions to the novel ethical and legal questions accompanying scientific and technological advancements in healthcare, particularly as they relate to privacy and information.
Under the supervision of the Institute’s directors and associate director, and potentially in coordination with other faculty or departments of WashU or external partners, the Legal Research Fellow will perform legal and policy research, which should lead to publication, in an area of privacy law. Research should lead to publications such as scholarly articles and white papers as well as other, shorter items such as blogs, primers and op-eds on these topics. Once selected, the Fellow will work with The Institute to define the scope and specifics of the project(s) and to identify specific deliverables.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Trains under the supervision of a faculty mentor including (but not limited to):
- Designs a research project or projects.
- Manages their own project, which should lead to publication.
- Prepares and submits research papers, and related writings such as op-eds, with excellent writing skills and in a timely manner.
- Presents work both inside and outside the University with excellent oral communication skills.
- Maintains conscientious and ethical discharge of research responsibilities and conforms to ethical standards in research and writing.
- Maintains collegiality and builds working relationships with students, colleagues and external partners and stakeholders.
- Attends and participates in Cordell Institute events.
- Attends periodic Cordell Institute staff meetings and participates in other Cordell Institute projects as assigned.
Salary Range:
Base pay is commensurate with experience.

Required Qualifications:
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school with a demonstrated interest in privacy law or doctoral degree in a related field, or in the process of obtaining a doctoral degree in a related field.
- Outstanding research and writing skills.
- Outstanding oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to make oral presentations.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Self-disciplined, able to work independently with minimal day-to-day oversight.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain working relationships with students, colleagues and external partners and to work as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated publication(s) in law, policy, or scientific journals.
