About the Project

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to join the group of Dr Richard Meek to study the role of protein machinery in brain calcification. This exciting project funded by the MRC uses a multidisciplinary approach of mass spectrometry, microscopy, and cell-based assays to explore how dysfunctional carbohydrate-processing causes disease. The post offers huge potential in understanding the molecular basis of brain signalling and neurological disorders. Previous experience in tissue culture and proteomics including data collection, processing and interpretation is essential.

This project located in the School of Biological Sciences, boasts a wealth of expertise in mass spectrometry, neuroscience and glycobiology. You will be part of a vibrant and friendly glycobiology hub at Southampton that uses cutting-edge mass spectrometry and biochemical approaches to understand disease mechanisms.

About the Role

You will be using a variety of approaches, including proteomics, microscopy and cell-based assays to understand how dysfunctional protein machinery causes brain calcification. The role requires strong organisational skills, including the ability to maintain detailed and dated laboratory and electronic notes. You will be collaborating with world-leading scientists to deliver high quality and impactful science.

The post is available until 31/10/2028 on a full-time basis.

Informal enquires about the project can be made to Dr Richard Meek (r.w.meek@soton.ac.uk)

About You

You will have or be near completion of a PhD in biology, chemistry or related discipline, where you have gained experience in proteomic methodologies to understand biological questions. You will have experience in tissue culture and cell-based techniques. Good statistical and analytical skills are essential. You will be able to work independently, and excellent written and verbal English is required. Experience in neurobiology and/or glycobiology is useful but not essential.
