College of Medicine and Public Health

At the College of Medicine and Public Health, we deliver clinical, population and lab-based research, integrated teaching programs and high-quality clinical services. Our footprint reaches out from our world class teaching hospital at the Flinders Medical Centre in South Australia to multiple rural clinical locations all the way to Darwin in the Northern Territory. Our research and teaching equip the next generation of leaders and innovators with the skill, commitment, and vision to protect vulnerable communities and truly advance health outcomes. It is at the heart of everything we do.

About the Role

Join a 3-year NHMRC-funded project related to a novel gut-brain circuit that controls mood and behaviour as our Research Fellow, where you will have the opportunity to undertake research in the discipline of Human Physiology under the broad direction of the Chief Investigator. Working closely and collaboratively with the Chief Investigator and wider Research Team, you will be able to contribute to project design and implementation, the analysis of data and the preparation of manuscripts for publication.

You will have the opportunity to actively report on new and current research related to the research program, through generation of high-quality publications and conference presentations. In addition, this position will contribute to the preparation of applications for externally funded research funding and may assist in leading students involved in the research Project, according to the University’s policies, practices and standards. You will also work across the following responsibilities:

  • Actively contributing to the research project by collaborating with the Research Team to successfully deliver project milestones and Key Performance Indicators.
  • Independently contributing to the planning and execution of research by offering new and innovative ideas, reviewing relevant literature and other sources of information, actively participating in the production of data, contributing to the writing and editing of grant applications and attending seminars, meetings and conferences.
  • Playing a lead role in coordinating, planning and executing the project tasks required to collaborate with industry partners.
  • Independently contributing to ethical, high quality and innovative research and evaluation through activities such as scholarship, publishing in recognised high quality journals and assisting the preparation and submission of bids for external research funding.

This position makes a significant contribution to the University’s strategic plan to changing 10 million lives, Every One Matters, by 2035 through education, research and partnership.

About You

You are an experienced researcher who is passionate about Human Physiology and is curious about the gut-brain circuit that controls mood and behaviour. You hold a PhD in physiology or neuroscience or related areas, highlighting your commitment to contributing to research centred around better understanding the human body. Your well-developed interpersonal and communication skills are highlighted by your innate ability to foster an inclusive research team environment, including experience supervising junior staff and students, and your wide-spreading network of diverse stakeholders and industry partners. You will also be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated research experience in terms of publications in high quality journals, and presentations at a national and/or international level in a field relevant to this project.
  • Demonstrated experience in, or understanding quantitative research methodologies relevant to the project including some or all of the following: electrophysiology, secretion experiments, small animal surgery, in vivo animal work, mouse behavioural analysis, molecular genetics, use or maintenance of transgenic mouse colonies, microscopy, immunohistochemistry.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering project targets on time, and the ability to plan and execute data collection and analysis related to these projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to critically review the literature in relevant fields.
