Research Fellow, Mathematical Modeller
Overview:
- 1 x full time, fixed term (15 months) position available
- Salary Academic Level B ($115,303 - $136,925) + 17% Superannuation
- Based at the City, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University
About You
The Research Fellow will collaborate with researchers at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP, CSIRO), as well as international colleagues in Japan and North America, to improve an existing model for the spread of Cyvirus cyprinidallo3 (also known as Cyprinid Herpes Virus or CyHV-3) as a biocontrol agent for common carp in Australia. The modelling will serve as part of the scientific basis for a decision from the Parliament of Australia as to whether the virus will be introduced into Australian populations of common carp.
In this role, you will lead and/or contribute to high-quality research projects within your area of expertise. You will undertake innovative research that makes a meaningful impact in your field and builds your recognition at a national level. This position offers the opportunity to grow your research leadership through both independent and collaborative work.
You will play an active role in shaping and delivering research aligned with the University’s key focus areas. This includes building productive research networks across RMIT and with local and national partners, both internal and external. You will be supported to pursue competitive research funding, publish high-quality outputs, and contribute to a dynamic and inclusive research culture within the School.
We are looking for candidates with their knowledge and experience in the key focus areas:
- Emerging track record and recognition for quality research outputs in the field of biological mathematics.
- Demonstrated mathematics and computer programming skills with experience in modelling infectious disease dynamics, population dynamics or fisheries.
- Proven experience and ability programming in R or Python.
- Proven experience and interest in the application of mathematical modelling techniques to model the ecology of wildlife disease.
- Proven ability to work to deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills appropriate for interacting with higher degree by research candidates, staff and industry, together with a strong commitment to teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Qualifications
Mandatory: PhD or equivalent in relevant field
