About This Opportunity

We're seeking a Research Fellow/Senior Research Officer to grow their expertise in applied electromagnetics and antenna design, contributing to a pioneering quantum sensor project.

The successful candidate will lead research in antenna technologies and microwave engineering for quantum sensing. We’re looking for engineers with strong skills in electromagnetics, simulation tools, and microwave prototyping, and an interest in quantum technologies. You'll collaborate across academia and industry partners in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment.

The project focuses on designing electromagnetic structures for quantum sensors and studying their operating environments. The researcher will drive this work and explore new research and collaboration opportunities.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Research:
    • Simulation and analysis of quantum sensor environment using industry-standard electromagnetic simulation tools (such as HFSS, CST or equivalent).
    • Design of novel antenna and flux focalising structures for operation with quantum sensors.
    • Conception and implementation of in-house test beds as per project requirements.
    • Experimental characterisation of the designed structures in the microwave lab and anechoic chamber.
    • Close and collegial work with project partners in an interdisciplinary environment including theoretical and experimental physicists, material scientists, and manufacturing process engineers some of which are based in Adelaide and Melbourne.
    • Interaction with project partners in academia and industry.
    • Production of quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms and opportunity to learn about the most advanced quantum modelling techniques.
    • Participation in applications for competitive research funding to support projects and activities.
  • Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise students, recruit and manage employees, provide performance feedback and training, manage staff across the employee lifecycle and resolve conflicts.
  • Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

About You

  • Completion of a PhD in the discipline of applied electromagnetics and antenna engineering (or a closely related field).
  • An emerging profile in research in the discipline area.
  • Proficiency in electromagnetic modelling and/or commercial simulation tools (CST/HFSS), in antenna technology, RF circuits and RF measurements.
  • Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals and effective presentation at conferences.
  • Evidence of contributions towards successfully obtaining external research funding is a plus.
  • Evidence of industrial experience or past involvement in industry-funded projects is a plus.
  • Interest and knowledge in quantum devices/sensors and quantum technologies is a plus.
