Job Description

  • Fixed Term, full time appointment (21 months)
  • Level B: $122,478 - $144,275 + 17% superannuation

Led by the University of Wollongong, the Steel Research Hub brings together 8 Universities (RMIT University, University of Sydney, University of Newcastle, Swinburne University of Technology, Deakin University, Monash University and University of NSW) and 10 industry partners (BlueScope, Infrabuild Wire, Infrabuild Manufacturing, Liberty Primary Steel, ArcelorMittal, Australian Steel Institute, Weld Australia, Australian Industry Group and NASH) to deliver innovative research designed to enable a necessary technological shift across the entire steel supply chain.

Working within Program 3 (Advanced Corrosion Performance and Manufacturing Efficiency) of the Steel Research Hub, the Research Fellow will be involved in leading research activities related to characterisation of corrosion products and confirmation of associated mechanisms.  They will be working closely with BlueScope scientists, and Deakin University and Monash University researchers.

The successful candidate will be specifically responsible for conducting research on identifying the composition and morphology of corrosion products formed on bare alloy and organic coated (pre-painted) steel products and correlating the exposure conditions and history with the corrosion products, so as to improve the relevance of laboratory-based accelerated exposure cycles. They will also be involved in the planning and review of other research and development activities in Project 3.1, including developments of a sensor network for monitoring of environmental conditions in real-time, and mechanistic corrosion models. The role involves regular communication of outcomes to industry and academic partners, as well as the preparation of peer-reviewed journal articles and internal confidential reports.
