RESEARCH INTERN

Dr. Maria Woodward's lab is looking for a M4 medical student for a year-long paid research position to serve on clinical and health services research projects in ophthalmology. This is an in-person position at the Kellogg Eye Center, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Woodward's lab works to improve the quality of care for patients with eye infections, specifically corneal ulcers, through deep learning image analysis algorithms applied in clinics and health-system interventions. The goals will be for the student to get exposure to clinical research in ophthalmology with opportunities to participate in the recruitment of patients, perform clinical research studies, work in a research team, publish manuscripts, and to present research at meetings. Past trainees have gone on to successfully match at competitive ophthalmology programs.

  • Assist study team with aspects of clinical research coordination including but not limited to conducting study visits with study participants including participant recruitment, informed consent and administering surveys
  • Data entry into research databases requiring skillful attention to detail
  • Work collaboratively by maintaining a good rapport and communication with research teams and faculty, as well as patients and clinic staff
  • Staff members are expected to work independently when appropriate and regularly exercise good judgment in setting priorities, resolving operational problems, and applying policies, procedures, and methods, while maintaining the strictest of confidentiality at all times
  • Incoming M4 Medical Student - expected graduation date of May 2027
  • 3+ years in research activities
  • Bachelor degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Must work for 1 year in-person at Kellogg Eye Center
  • Published at least 2 research papers
  • Presented at least 5 research presentations
  • Experience using formulas and functions in programs like Excel and REDCap to create databases
  • Electronic medical record experience
  • Experience in conducting clinical research, data collection, and data analysis
  • Experience working with patients in a clinical care environment
  • Knowledge of research protocols and methodologies
  • Familiarity with OnCore, MiChart, and eResearch applications
