RESEARCH INVESTIGATOR
The laboratory of Jiandie Lin at the Life Sciences Institute is looking for a Research Investigator to lead research projects to investigate 1) the cellular and molecular mechanism of metabolic diseases development, focusing on hepatocyte function and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) and 2) whether and how hepatocyte senescence drives MASH progression. These studies will require considerable expertise in metabolic biology and pathophysiology, research experiences in omics-platforms (e.g. single-cell/single-nucleus transcriptomics and proteomics) and cellular and molecular biology techniques, including immunofluorescent staining, confocal microscopy, real-time quantitative PCR, cloning, protein analyses and functional assays using in vitro cellular and in vivo animal models. You should have large-scale data analysis experience analyzing single-cell/single-nucleus RNA sequencing datasets, data interpretation and visualization and will be expected to write grant applications and present your research work in scientific conferences within and outside the University. In addition to planning and performing experiments, you will oversee research performed by students and research technicians and will report directly to Dr. Lin and work full-time on-site.
Experimental responsibilities will include:
- Maintain and manage genetically modified mouse colonies
- Design in vivo experiments to study regulatory mechanisms regarding the development of metabolic diseases
- Design experiments using primary hepatocytes and hepatoma cell lines to study the regulatory signal pathways
- Using omics-platforms to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling the development of metabolic diseases
- Analyze and interpret omics-based datasets
- Perform quantitative analyses and communicate findings through reports and summaries
- Solve experimental problems that arise in any of the responsibilities
Non-experimental responsibilities will include:
- Provide consultation and advice to laboratory members in areas of expertise
- Write grants as a junior faculty
- Assist the PI in preparing manuscripts and grants
- Mentor the research work of junior trainees in the lab including graduate (master and doctoral) and undergraduate students
- Present research work at scientific platforms within and outside the University
- Follow laboratory best practices for safety and quality
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or related discipline
- Minimum three years of postdoctoral research experience
- Minimum five years experience in cell and molecular biology techniques
- Minimum five years experience in managing genetically modified mouse colony
- Minimum three years experience in large-scale data analysis using bioinformatic tools
- Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, R, Shell)
- Minimum three years experience mentoring students and research staff
- Strong publication and scientific presentation record
- Prior experience working in a collaborative environment
Our mission at the Life Sciences Institute is to promote the understanding of the fundamental processes of life, and to pioneer new ideas to improve human health. For more information on the Lin laboratory: https://www.lsi.umich.edu/science/our-labs/lin-lab
