Job Description Summary
Serve as Research Manager of the Institute for Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism's Rodent Metabolic Phenotyping Core; provide daily management for all activities in the Rodent Phenotyping Core; train and supervise research specialists and technicians; design and perform metabolic studies in mouse models, and chemical and immunoassays on tissues; analyze assay results and communicate results to investigators; maintain core usage statistics for reporting purposes; collaborate with the Core director for long range planning; develop, implement and monitor lab safety guidelines and procedures; plan and manage service center budget; oversee lab facilities; order/maintain supplies.
Job Description
As Research Manager of the Rodent Metabolic Phenotyping Core:
- Take primary responsibility for the strategic planning and day to day management of core staff performing complex in vivo studies in rodent models for core clients.
- Train and serve as the direct supervisor for Research Specialists and Technicians in the core, and serve as the liaison between the director or core clients and the other staff. Clients will include labs from within and outside the University of Pennsylvania. This includes developing protocols, ensuring that techniques are performed properly, managing equipment and data collection systems, and ensuring that data analysis is performed according to accepted practices.
- The Research Manager is expected to establish expertise in both the technical and theoretical aspects of core assays including metabolic clamps, indirect calorimetry, telemetry, bomb calorimetry, DEXA, EchoMRI and other services as needed.
- Plan and manage service center budget, including evaluation and setting of prices and projecting future revenue and expenses in collaboration with multiple client labs.
- Order and manage lab supplies and coordinate rodent transfers to ensure that all necessary resources are in place for core experiments.
- Prepare financial, regulatory, and technical progress reports. Maintain core usage data for reporting to the Core Director, Penn IDOM, NIH and other agencies. Assist with drafting of grants and/or articles for publication.
- Directly perform and analyze assays in rodent models: Body composition (NMR; DEXA); CLAMS; treadmill exercise insulin/glucose clamp and radioisotopic tracer kinetics; thermography; BAT thermogenesis; tissue chemistry; ELISA; Glucose and insulin tolerance tests.
- Interface with companies and Penn IT to troubleshoot equipment and software issues, often on the fly, and ensure the smooth operation of the core.
- Perform additional duties as needed and assigned to support animal research on campus, including consultation with internal and external investigators on the selection and design of experimental approaches.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science/Arts and 5 to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Master's degree or PhD preferred.
