Job Summary

The Research Project Coordinator supports the overall development of research project(s). Assists with project design, management, and implementation. Promotes the project and serves as liaison between the project and contacts internal and external to the University. May supervise students, provide general office assistance, create promotional materials, and assist in the development of other potential projects.

Additional Department Summary

The Project Coordinator will work under the general supervision of the Community Oriented nature-based Science for Ecosystem Restoration and versatile Engineering (CONSERVE) research group director to support implementation of the CONSERVE Research program. Organize all aspects of the program including recruiting and evaluating student applicants, organizing student activities (e.g., seminars, field trips), providing professional development training and mentoring to students, coordinating an internship program, managing internal communication, maintaining project web site and social media, budgeting, record keeping, managing data, coordinating logistics and travel, tracking progress, evaluating the program, serving as the primary author of the annual report, and building cohesion across the research cohort and faculty members. Foster a positive environment, work collaboratively with a team of faculty and students from a variety of backgrounds and experience, and offer creative and impactful ideas in support of the CONSERVE program.

This position is supported by several multi-year CONSERVE research projects. Continuation of this position is based on having sustained external funding. The position will be with the Alabama Water Institute (AWI). AWI is one of The University of Alabama’s five research institutes with a specific focus on water. Our research is vital to sustain waterways, marshes, estuaries and coastal areas, and the CONSERVE research group provides a forum for interdisciplinary research and education; bringing together university researchers, students and staff to foster collaboration and a broad interdisciplinary focus on water issues that face our world today. CONSERVE-affiliated researchers specialize in water security and quality, remote sensing, hydrological modeling, biological variability, watershed management and human health through synergies with existing centers and the creation of new centers under the umbrella of AWI.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher and some experience coordinating projects.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications

Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Skills and Knowledge

Strong leadership, facilitation, interpersonal, and collaboration skills. Positive attitude. Good communication skills, both written and verbal. Also required are computer skills, not limited to spreadsheet applications, personal computing networks, and internet software. Must have the ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary groups under high levels of activity. The incumbent must be detail oriented and manage details to meet deadlines. Anticipates and plans proactively for known deadlines and annual reporting cycles.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience with coordinating research programs and completing administrative tasks, or other relevant transferable work experience in research administration.

Advanced degree, masters or doctorate in a social science related field or other discipline connected to water or environment. Career interest in applied science and water-related scholarship that impacts communities. Ability and interest to apply Traditional Ecological Knowledge would be considered an advantage but not required. Experience working on complex projects, with with groups from a variety of backgrounds and experience, and across disciplines is preferred.
