Research Project Manager / Data Analyst
Position Summary/Description
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering is seeking a Data Analysis Project Manager to oversee the day-to-day research operations of Institute for Environmental Health Solutions (IEHS). The manager will oversee numerous ongoing activities associated with multiple concurrent research projects of Dr. Julia Rager, Dr. Rebecca Fry, and the Institute for Environmental Health Solutions (IEHS).
The Data Analyst Project Manager will become a key member of a dynamic research team by providing critical research expertise for complex high-dimensional data analyses in biomedical / environmental health research that includes: (1) developing novel advanced statistical methods and bioinformatics/cheminformatics pipelines to process, analyze, annotate and illustrate high-dimensional data, (2) analyzing large complex omics/high-throughput research data (e.g., genomics, metabolomics, exposomics and non-targeted chemical data), (3) discovering and proposing new research hypotheses through data mining, (4) contributing to research activities such as writing grant proposals, (5) reporting research results in posters and manuscripts, (6) presenting data and information to the research team, (7) serving as a research contact and data analyst manager for students, postdoctoral trainees, and research staff.
Education and Experience
Excellent written and oral communication skills are needed. Outstanding programming skills (R and Python preferred) for data analysis topics spanning omics, systems biology, chemistry, exposure science, epidemiology, and health outcomes. Excellent organizational skills and data/script tracking and sharing. Capacity for learning new technical skills independently. Demonstrated self-motivation.
Essential Skills
Though applicants with experience in all areas of statistics and data science are encouraged to apply, we recognize a general need and will give preference for skills and knowledge in the following areas:
- PhD in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, or related field from appropriately accredited institutions.
- Expertise in a range of advanced statistical methodologies with application to high-dimensional data analysis
- Demonstrated expertise in statistical analysis (2+ years of experience) for large data sets related to biomedical and/or environmental health research
- Excellent skills in programming in several languages, including Python and R, in complex data analyses
- Experience in analyzing omics data, including genomics, metabolomics, exposomics and chemical data
- Experience in advanced data visualizations and figure generation
- Experience in writing grant proposals and manuscripts
- Experience in advising and training students and consulting research projects
- Excellent written and oral communication skills for research presentations
