Job Summary

This grant-funded appointment is for one year, beginning September 1, 2026, or earlier. Renewal for a second year is possible, subject to mutual agreement, satisfactory performance, and funding availability.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative research project aimed at developing optimal staffing and scheduling solutions for healthcare operations in a hospital system. The project addresses challenges related to clinical and operational uncertainty, as well as physician burnout and retention.

The successful candidate will lead research activities, including the development of predictive and prescriptive models and algorithms for healthcare operations and workforce planning. Responsibilities will include data analysis, optimization model development, stakeholder engagement, and translation of research findings into practical and implementable decision-support solutions. The candidate will also present findings to local, national, and international audiences and contribute to manuscript preparation and publication.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for complex or unusual research assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures.
  2. Plans, schedules, and coordinates detailed phases of one or more parts of a research project, including devising new approaches to problems encountered, conducting operations security reviews, and assisting with progress/project reporting.
  3. Performs leadership duties to include assisting in the preparation of specifications and the development of techniques; supervision and training of student employees, interns, and volunteers; oversees staff using established procedures; and leads research teams in advanced multi-year research activities.
  4. Responsible for the evaluation, selection, and application of scientific techniques used in routine research.
  5. Performs professional research, including performing experiments; gathering and analyzing data and samples; setting up/operating equipment; and inspecting minor fabrication, erection, or assembly for conformance to specifications.
  6. Performs specified phases of research projects to include making and recording observations and measurements; compiles data; processes paperwork; maintains lab accounts; writes technical reports; and assists in writing and editing grants.
  7. Performs calculations to complete research test results; collates data; performs statistical analysis of lab results and maintains notes and log or computer database; performs basic procedures for computer-assisted data analysis.
  8. Trains incoming and existing students on experimental procedures and assists with students' papers before submission for journals or classes.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, Vocational Training, or Apprenticeship in a related field.
  • Five (5) years of related work experience. Additional education may substitute for experience on a one year for one year basis.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, including management science, industrial engineering, operations research, data analytics, computer science, machine learning, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Candidates should have a strong academic record, along with expertise in predictive and prescriptive analytics and decision-making under uncertainty, including experience in scheduling, healthcare operations, resource management, and stochastic processes.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience collaborating with healthcare practitioners and operational stakeholders, and with demonstrated ability to develop real-world, implementable analytical and decision-support solutions in healthcare or related applied settings.
  • Strong programming and data analysis skills (e.g., Python, R, and other statistical or machine learning tools) are highly desirable.
