Research Specialist A
Job Description Summary
The Research Specialist A is a position within the Stanger lab in the Department of Medicine and the Pancreatic Cancer Research Center. The RSA will be engaged in a broad variety of laboratory activities involving molecular biology, animal studies (mice), and assistance with the generation and culture of cancer organoids in a sterile tissue culture environment. The laboratory techniques to be employed may include tissue culture of mammalian cells, cloning, viral preparation, tissue sectioning, animal husbandry and surgical procedures, microscopy, image processing, and light data analysis. In addition, the RSA will be responsible for assisting the Stanger lab manager with general lab duties, including ordering, updating IACUC animal protocols, and assisting other laboratory personnel as needed. The RSA will work closely with Dr. Minh Than in setting up his laboratory and performing other research-related functions. As needed, this individual may also be called upon to assist in clinical research efforts, such as identifying potential patients for enrollment, maintaining various REDCap databases, procurement in cooperation with HUP, PAH, and CCH surgical teams, to aseptic processing, through banking and inventory management, to retrieval and disbursement.
Given the scope of the potential activities involved, and the interfacing with multiple personnel within the Stanger laboratory and other collaborating labs, an aptitude for quick learning, multitasking, manual dexterity, and strong interpersonal skills are all required. Aside from a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or a related discipline, no detailed experience in any of the above-mentioned areas is required.
Job Responsibilities
- Laboratory work - tissue culture (organoids, cell lines, freeze/thawing, inventory)
- Laboratory work - molecular biology (cloning, virus production, qPCR, microscopy, sectioning)
- Animal work - husbandry, surgical procedures, Matrigel production
- Lab administration - ordering, stocking, animal protocol updates
- Data Analysis - manage excel file, statistical analysis and graphing, image processing
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science and 0 to 1 year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Position is contingent upon continued funding.
