Essential Job Duties:
As an integral member of the research team, the Research Support Assistant will perform a variety of duties in support of human subjects health research studies. The individual in this position may be involved in a wide range of activities needed to support the research at a given point in time. Specific duties may include but are not limited to:

Support Development of Scientific, Grant, and Related Documents and Presentations

  • Complete literature reviews and summaries using databases such as PubMed
  • Utilize web-based tools to gather data such as demographics or rates of particular diseases
  • Edit existing material and/or create new material for professional looking presentations
  • Assist with proofing, preparing for submission, submitting and monitoring the status of manuscripts, grants, and other documents
  • Contribute to the preparation of research findings and reports. Assist in consultation, gather information in response to an inquiry; collects information for grant writing and reporting
  • Assist with developing and maintaining other documents for the study team such as CVs and research presentations

Administrative Assistance

  • Coordinate routine meetings including determining availability, scheduling, and making room reservations for individuals with highly complex and busy schedules
  • Support planning and coordination of large team wide meetings and events including scheduling, virtual or physical room reservations, any necessary purchases such as food, obtaining RSVPs, and activity planning
  • Coordinate routine day-to-day purchases of project related materials and ensure materials are well-stocked, prepared for use, and organized
  • Maintain records of building and IT access
  • Assist team members with making travel purchases and coordinating approvals as needed
  • Create and maintain meeting notes
  • Support the maintenance of electronic and paper files; organize files and keep records of where items are located

Candidate will use various office hardware, software, web-based applications, information systems and office technology to access, analyze and process information and complete tasks; tools may include telephone, computer with basic software, copier/printer and scheduling tools; this includes use of web browsers, Zoom, EndNote, and Microsoft office programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access

Study Support Including Project Management Activities, Regulatory Compliance, and Other Study Activities

  • Support development and refinement of existing study processes, protocols, and documents
  • Assist with regulatory compliance including IRB submissions and maintenance of regulatory forms and binders
  • Travel as necessary (5% of the time) based on study needs; travel will be reimbursed
  • Assist with the collection and maintenance of documentation related to administration of human subjects research studies
  • Support special projects as needed such as organizing and submitting requests for release of external records and record requested information from the records (e.g. medical records, academic records, etc.) or paper questionnaire forms for analysis
  • Identify and engage community organizations (e.g. nonprofits, faith communities, healthcare organizations, educational institutions) in NC
  • Participate in recruitment activities including putting up flyers in the community/clinic, attending in-person and remote community events/ services/meetings, and/or using other established methods of communication in the community.
  • On occasion when needed, contact study participants by mail or by telephone and assist with periodic in-person research events

Assist with Data Management and Analysis

  • Support data Management including set up and maintenance of databases and processing, cleaning, organization, and sharing of data
  • Complete data analyses including support of internal and external reporting and publications

Communication and Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with other members of the study team to identify creative solutions to address challenges in the conduct of the study
  • Recognize and communicate problems to other study members and work with other members of the team to quickly solve problems
  • Navigate processes for administrative approvals related to study activities
  • Provide supervision to students assisting with tasks. Our group employs 20 or more undergraduate students each semester, and this team member will be responsible for supervising the students and their work, approving their time, and performing other supervisory duties to ensure the students are supported and productive.
  • Assist with onboarding new study staff
  • May perform other duties incidental to research activities as assigned

Required Qualifications:
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Clear and concise communication verbally and in written form.
  • Ability to manage time and shift tasks as priorities change in a fast-paced environment
  • Extremely high level of attention to detail and accuracy
  • Interest in public health research
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaborate with a large team
  • Sound judgment and problem solving skills
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible in order to meet new challenges in study conduct
  • Demonstrated organizational, planning, and follow-up skills
  • Leadership skills and proven track record of accountability
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and other applications for data entry, document development and editing, communication, and scheduling
  • Ability to learn new skills and computer programs
  • Proven ability to interact harmoniously with different groups of individuals of all ages, ranging from age 2 to age 75
  • Ability to get to and from office to home/clinic visits in the greater central North Carolina area and surrounding regions including ability to transport study related supplies, samples, and documentation as needed; all mileage will be reimbursed

Preferred Qualifications:
Previous research experience and/or familiarity with research and data collection methods is beneficial

  • Master's degree in related field
  • Ability to engage with the community to facilitate participant recruitment
  • Driver's license and access to a car; all mileage will be reimbursed
