"Research Technician"

Radio-tracks wild turkey hens at remote locations in southern and northeastern Ohio. Downloads GPS locations and activity data onto temporary storage media. Uploads the data to permanent storage. Recovers egg remains and carcass remains of radio-tagged turkey hens. Locates, inspects, and examines nests after nesting activity terminates. Recovers, inspects, and Interprets sign at carcass recovery and nest sites to determine fates (live/dead, hatched/unhatched) of hen turkeys and nests. Measures vegetation and other characteristics at nest and brood sites. Periodically conducts counts of poults tended by successful-nesting hens by placing trail cameras at brooding sites, or with infrared optical equipment at night-roosting sites and day-use sites after playback of chick distress calls. Maintains field equipment, executes daily work schedule prioritizing activities based on project needs and generally works independently as directed by the project PI, graduate students, or Senior Research Assistants. Coordinates daily activities Ohio Division of Wildlife land management staff and obtains permission for access to private and public lands when needed.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

High School diploma or GED with 1 year of relevant work experience (outdoors skills and equipment, communicating or acquiring biological/environmental information or data). Proficient with safe operation of motor vehicles (valid state-issued drivers license required) and field equipment including light trucks and utility vehicles, and hand tools. Ability to navigate through unfamiliar terrain with maps, photos, compass, or GPS units. Proficient with computers and hand-held information devices and uploading or entering data into computer databases for statistical and Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis.

Preferred Qualifications:

College-level course work in wildlife ecology and management, forestry, zoology, or related field. Knowledge or experience with wildlife radiotelemetry and specialized equipment used to monitor locations and movements of wildlife. Ability to identify common Ohio birds and mammals by sight or sound. Ability to identify and measure woody and herbaceous plants.
