Research Technologist (DOM Infectious Disease)

Johns Hopkins, founded in 1876, is America's first research university and home to nine world-class academic divisions working together as one university.
We are seeking a Research Technologist who will perform laboratory tasks and completes routine assays following common or established protocols and procedures for the processing of blood.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Follow established procedures or protocols and utilize aseptic techniques to process whole blood into research samples and potentially perform viral immunology experiments.
- Completes basic blood separation and processing, which includes receipt and organization, and archiving of various samples.
- Communicate with internal/external study teams, monitor and maintenance of inventories derived from these efforts, and pull aliquots from freezers to satisfy researchers' requests for various study samples.
- Use basic science knowledge to learn techniques and methods of the lab.
- Gain problem-solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the research, and experience.
- Run lab tests and complete measurements.
- Identify and resolve common problems involved in routine assays.
- Increase skill base and knowledge of lab research and relevant assays.
- Train users in standard equipment operation and routine lab techniques and procedures.
- Set up experiments based on defined standards.
- Collect project data.
- Prepare, test, operate, and maintain standard laboratory equipment.
- Perform related laboratory maintenance, monitor inventory of supplies, and clean equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some related post-undergraduate work experience.
- Basic Microsoft Office experience.
- Prior basic/clinical research experience.

Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY ($42,000 targeted; Commensurate with exp.)

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
