Resident Support Assistant Director
Job Summary
The Resident Support Assistant Director is an integral member of the University Apartments leadership team and community. The University Apartments community is a vibrant and diverse community of graduate students, their families/dependents, and faculty/staff.
This professional supervises the Resident Manager staff, who provide 24-hour support to the residents of University Apartments. They also take the lead on responding to resident concerns and serve as a resource and advocate for residents of all ages, referring residents to appropriate staff, campus and community resources, and working closely with the University Apartments Leadership team, University Apartments Assembly, and University Apartments residents to identify community needs, and program accordingly to address those needs.
Work Schedule
This position works primarily Monday-Friday during Community Center business hours (8:00am-5:45pm). This position will require some occasional evening or weekend hours.
Key Job Responsibilities
- May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
- Triages and responds to emergency situations according to established policies and procedures in partnership with emergency personnel and law enforcement if necessary
- Assists with implementation of university procedures that address student conduct
- May supervise the day-to-day activities of unit staff and resolves routine and non-routine personnel issues
- Develops, implements, and evaluates resident housing operating policies, procedures, and programs to promote an inclusive community
- Manages the University Apartments live-in Resident Support staff who provide 24/7 on-call coverage to the University Apartments Community.
- Assists in the development and implementation of strategic unit initiatives or student programs
Department
Division of University Housing, University Apartments
University Apartments is a department within the Division of University Housing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a student service organization, University Apartments provides on-campus housing, programs, and services for our residents.
The team at University Apartments actively support the mission of the University while also meeting the needs of students, families, and guests by fostering the development of a residential community. The University Apartments staff provides these services to a community of approximately 2,500 residents in 1,240 apartments on 83 acres. Residents are primarily graduate students, post-docs, faculty, staff, and their families; many of whom are international. University Apartments also includes Eagle’s Wing Childcare and Education Programs, a licensed and nationally accredited early education program located in the University Apartments Community Center. The majority of families who use the center are residents of University Apartments. All programs and services sponsored by University Apartments are funded through rent or user fees.
Compensation
The starting annual salary is $73,000 or higher based on qualifications with a competitive retirement and benefits package, including vacation, holidays, and paid time off. Benefits information can be found at (https://hr.wisc.edu/benefits/)
Required Qualifications
- Four (4) years of full-time work experience in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Counseling, Social Work, Residence Life, Resident Support, or related field
- Minimum of two (2) years of staff supervision experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Four (4) or more years of staff supervision experience
- Prior experience working with graduate students and/or in a graduate/family housing environment
- Experience working with a diverse and/or international community
- Bilingual/bicultural and/or international work/study abroad experience
- Experience or training with conflict resolution and/or mediation
- Experience with case management, on-call, or crisis response
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Valid driver’s license
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Counseling, Social Work, or related field OR Bachelor’s degree (any discipline) with a Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Counseling, Social Work, or related field.
