Basic Function:

Under the supervision of the Director and Academic Specialists, the Resident Tutor Mentor will be primarily responsible for supervising, advising, and tutoring assigned participants of the Upward Bound program and providing assistance in the planning, organization, and implementation of program activities as needed.

Representative Duties:

  • Uses professional ethics; implements and enforces applicable goals, objectives, policies and procedures; supervises students in a group living environment to ensure their safety and well-being during recreational hours, evenings, and weekends
    June 9 - 12 - Residential Staff Training Week (Hours will vary depending on training schedule)
    June 14th - July 25th 9:00am - 1:00pm; 7:00pm - 11:00pm: Mon - Thu (Hours could Vary)
    June 21, June 28, July 5, July 12, July 19 - 4:00pm - 11:00pm (Tentative Sunday Schedule).
  • Attends all assigned UB course sessions and supports course instructors during in-class learning.
  • Monitors and evaluates students' academic and social progress; ensures that students are prepared for class and attends regular classroom sessions.
  • Supports and monitors academic progress utilizing knowledge of specific subject matter in one of more of the Upward Bound core curriculum subjects
    Math (through pre-calculus), English Literature, English Composition, Foreign Language and Laboratory Science
  • Implements direct tutoring services or refers intervention strategy/recommendation to UB administrative staff.
  • Advises and provides support to students in personal, social, and academic areas, including (but not limited to): the importance of proper life choices and decisions which will nurture a college-bound decision making process; strategies for academic improvement; and study skills and habits.
  • Serves as the primary liaison between administrative, instructional and other residential staff.
  • Maintains discipline and harmonious relations in the classroom and residence hall and as well as all other areas of the program in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Assesses any residence hall problems, assimilates facts, processes viewpoints and makes decisions in compliance with program guidelines.
  • Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy residential environment; reports incidents for the purpose of maintaining the safety of students and adhering to applicable rules, policies and regulations; Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Completes various administrative tasks (i.e. Class attendance , check-in/out procedures, etc.) in a timely fashion.
  • Responsible for ensuring all students adhere to SFSP meal pattern during dining hours and completes daily count of all qualified SFSP meals for the assigned day.
  • Participates in staff orientation and attends all staff meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Any Combination Equivalent to: Two years of college level course work and must be in good academic standing at an accredited postsecondary institution with experience that demonstrate leadership qualities, the ability to be a team player, and the ability to communicate constructively and effectively with high school students.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications: Upperclassmen or graduate students in good academic standing. Experience working with income-eligible, first-generation students. Completed at least one college level math course.
Additional consideration given to applicants who have taken at least one American Sign Language course, have taken and passed Calculus I or have experience with tutoring and classroom management.

Licenses and Other Requirements:

Must possess or have the ability to obtain First Aid and CPR certification.
Position requires living on campus Sunday - Thursday

Physical Abilities:

Detect to understand appropriate written correspondence; operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer; communicate to exchange information in person, in writing, on the telephone and by email; stationary position for extended periods of time; move or transport light objects; position self to store and/or retrieve files

Working Environment:

Classroom and residence hall environment; frequent interruptions; contact with secondary school student in need of contact resolution

Hiring Range

$17.00/Hr
