Work Schedule
Directly responsible to the Director of the TRIO Upward Bound Program, Teacher Assistants will work up to a maximum of forty (40) hours per week for eight weeks.

Position Summary
The Upward Bound Program is a federally-funded pre-college academic program, designed to motivate and prepare high school students for college and university work. It is an intensive college preparatory support project designed to provide low-income, first generation high school students with encouragement and the essential skills to complete high school and earn a post-secondary degree.

Physical Demands
The job responsibilities are performed in a classroom area and during college visits and cultural experience trips. Travel is required. The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (8 - 45 pounds). Typically requires regular use of one or more physical senses of medium intensity and long duration. Must meet reasonable deadlines, quotas or demands for accuracy, and, may be involved in some mildly unpleasant situations.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Successful completion of at least two (2) years of college, with demonstrated proficiency in at least one of the subjects taught in the Summer Academy, for purposes of tutoring.
  2. High level of maturity, self-discipline, leadership, and ability to work on a team.
  3. Familiarity with and sensitivity to the needs of low-income and at-risk students.
  4. Commitment to being a positive role model and to helping students prepare for post-secondary education.
  5. Capacity to confront and resolve conflicts.
  6. Capacity to assimilate facts, process viewpoints, and make decisions in compliance with program policy.
  7. Capacity to maintain confidentiality.

Preferred but not Required

  1. Previous relevant experience with adolescents.

Proposed Salary
Compensation is $17.68 per hour.

Job Duties

Essential Function: STUDENT SUPPORT AND PROGRAM COORDINATION

Description:

  • Provide guidance and tutoring in high school math, science, literature/composition, foreign language, computer technology, and social studies.
  • Provide academic advising to an assigned group of students.
  • Chaperone students on all college visits and cultural experience trips during the summer.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of special programs, athletic events, newsletters, and other activities.
  • Provide a written report at the end of the summer to include assessment of positive and negative aspects of each activity of the program.
