Overview
In 1971, Yale University established Yale Health to provide health services to its facility, staff and students through a multidisciplinary health maintenance organization located on campus. Yale Health has more than 49,000 members including students, staff, faculty and their families who come from every state in the country and almost every country in the world. Our state-of-the-art facility at 55 Lock Street, is where our members receive most of their care from our 150+ providers.
It is a 144,000 square foot medical facility with over 90 exam rooms, an Acute Care Department, a 15-bed inpatient facility with several negative pressure rooms, a diagnostic imaging suite including MR and CT scan, x-ray and ultrasound and a full-service retail pharmacy. The Inpatient/Acute Care RN Provides direct service in multi-problem nursing situations for a selected caseload of patients in the Yale Health Inpatient Care Facility and Acute Care.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Audit records, conduct patient interviews, identify problems, choose and implement a plan of action.
- Communicate with other health care providers to ensure appropriate on-going care.
- Provide emotional support and/or encourage the use of appropriate support services when indicated.
- Encourage preventive health practices including providing the client with health knowledge necessary for the maintenance and/or improvement of health.
- Engage in telephone triage.
- Make fiscal decisions such as ordering ambulance service, ordering laboratory tests, and ordering equipment and supplies for use in the clinical areas.
- Engage in crisis intervention and provide ongoing support to patients with chronic or recurrent problems.
- Prepared to render life saving care, such as the initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, until the MD arrives.
- Assist in the stabilizing of the patient for transfer to acute facilities.
- Engage in discharge planning from ICF; coordinates social and community services.
- Provide nursing support to Acute Care Services Suite in the 1C after midnight.
- Responsible for maintenance of a comfortable, orderly, safe, clean environment.
- Expected to know and execute fire and disaster procedures.
- Carry a clinical load of patients with serious and complex health problems.
- Ability to work as part of a collaborative team.
- Flexible and willing to provide coverage for colleagues on other shifts, as necessary.
This is an 8-Month Fixed Term position
Schedule/Shift: Part-time, 20 hours rotating schedule: 12:00 midnight - 8:30 am. ,16 hours - 1 week 1 and 24 hours - week 2; every other weekend and every other holiday.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated ability in an ER setting.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and excellent written skills.
- Proficiency with IV certification to initiate IV therapy; current CPR.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and organize.
- Excellent attendance, punctuality and reliability as attested to by references.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
Evidence of maintaining professional skills through continuous education and attendance at relevant seminars and workshops.
Principal Responsibilities
- The clinical nurse uses the nursing process to deliver high quality comprehensive and individualized care to patients admitted to the Infirmary In patient unit.
- Collaborates with members of the multidisciplinary team to support the work of the team, the unit activities, and the accomplishment of positive patient outcomes.
- Delegates responsibilities to appropriate members of the care delivery team based upon an understanding of others' roles, scope of practice, knowledge, and capabilities to ensure optimal utilization of personnel.
- Contributes to a positive work environment by being responsive to the need for change.
- Maintains a collaborative work relationship with staff members through respect and recognition of cultural and human diversity.
- Successfully completes the competency-based orientation within designated time frame.
- Identifies self-learning needs and actively participates in meeting them in collaboration with the leadership team. Sets and achieves professional goals.
- Delivers excellence in patient care through compliance with all patient safety and regulatory initiatives.
- Communicates in a calm professional manner with patients, families, colleagues, members of the care team, and other hospital personnel, accepts and elicits feedback, and works toward resolving problems and clarifying issues and concerns.
- Uses resources in a fiscally sound manner.
- Compliance with University, State and federal healthcare regulations.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and a minimum of one year nursing experience in an acute inpatient med surgical unit, or rehab/semi acute facility.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut or Connecticut license eligible.
Physical Requirements
May require prolonged standing, walking, use of sight, hearing and touch, moving/lifting patients of varying weights. Requires keyboard use and may require ability to sit in front of a computer screen for long periods of time.
