Offer Description
Background: Despite their success in massive engineering applications, deep neural networks are found to be vulnerable to perturbations of input, raising security concerns in safety-critical applications. Input perturbations may occur due to errors or adversarial attacks. The latter is a deceiving technique that is “fooling” ML models using a defective input, e.g., deceiving an autonomous vessel to move in the opposite direction from intended, or deceiving a cybersecurity system to identify a…
malicious activity as normal. A closed-loop control formulation to automatically detect and the errors caused by various attacks or perturbations will be investigated. Key components of this mechanism include embedding functions at both input and hidden layers to detect the possible errors, and a control process to adjust the neurons to fix or mitigate these errors before making a prediction. State-of-the-art frameworks will be investigated, adapted and extended to cope with various data streams from various sensors, and neural network models for anomaly detection. The methodologies that will be investigated will be generic, contributing to trustworthy decision making for risk assessment and prediction in AI applications. In the context of the project D-NAVIO applications relevant to waterborne digital systems will be investigated.
In connection mainly with WP3 "Intelligent Digital Technologies for Risk Analysis in Large Complex Vessels", but also WP4 "D-NAVIO Platform Co-design and Integration", and WP6 "Pilot Use Cases Implementation, Validation, and Evaluation", we are currently offering a post-doctoral position with responsibility to investigate and develop methods and models for robust AI towards trustworthy decision making. The foreseen duration of the employment will be 1 year, extensible up to the end of the project.
This work receives funding by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No101202933 (D-NAVIO), European Climate, Infrastructure, and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).
The University of Thessaly was founded in 1984. Its administrative and academic centre is in the city of Volos and departments in the largest cities in Central Greece. It now holds the 3rd place among Greek Universities, and it belongs to the top 5% of European Universities according to University Ranking of Academic Performance. The involved Department of Computer Science & Biomedical Informatics of UTH, is located in Lamia, and it is one of a few academic units in Europe providing multidisciplinary studies, which combine knowledge both from computer science and biomedicine. The project will be implemented at the Biomedical Imaging Laboratory of this department (https://is-innovation.eu/). Our laboratory offers a secure working environment that can conveniently accommodate ~30 researchers, and modern equipment that includes a high performance computing cloud for demanding AI applications with >200.000 GPU cores, 3D printers, virtual reality equipment and computational modelling and simulation platforms.
Interested candidates are advised to contact Prof. Dimitris Iakovidis as soon as possible.
