Job Summary
The Director, Strategic Initiatives & Internal Communications contributes through a senior leadership role to the formulation and execution of the UCSF School of Dentistry (SOD) vision and strategic plan. This position serves as key strategist and advisor to the Dean and Associate Dean of Administration & Finance, Chief of Staff on matters of strategic planning, resource allocation, personnel, processes and policy, communication strategies, engagement planning, and is responsible for continuous and integrated improvements on all such matters. Additionally, the Director, Strategic Initiatives & Internal Communications develops and implements effective communication efforts and oversees the design and delivery of the school’s strategy to ensure goals and objectives are achieved.
The Director, Strategic Initiatives & Internal Communications engages in conversations with school leaders to articulate organizational priorities; achieves consensus in the development and implementation of programs and projects; and manages various high-profile projects to ensure successful launch and execution. This position works with leaders across campus on campus-wide initiatives and crisis management; and ensures a DEIB lens is applies to School improvement efforts and initiatives.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $124,400 - $291,600 (Annual Rate).

We provide comprehensive oral health care services with over 125,000 patient visits per year. We offer a four-year DDS program as well as a two-year program for international dentists that culminates in the DDS degree. We have numerous specialty residencies, PhD and Master’s degree programs in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences, a combined DDS-PhD program, and a combined PhD-dental specialty training program. Other graduate programs include Craniofacial and Mesenchymal Biology and Bioengineering, and a DDS/MBA program. The School is one of the preeminent oral and craniofacial research enterprises in the world, ranking number one in National Institute of Health funding for 24 consecutive years.
UCSF Dental Center
The Dental Center is a cohesive entity within the structure of UCSF’s School of Dentistry that oversees and operates all clinical activities in the dental school. Its primary goal is to provide outstanding, seamless, cutting- edge patient-centered care. The Dental Center also aims to provide state of the art clinical experiences and education to students; deliver cost- effective patient care; and generate resources for reinvestment in the School of Dentistry’s educational, clinical and scholarship missions. UCSF Dental Center’s primary services include all advanced dental specialty programs, and the general dentistry and specialty faculty practices. A majority of the Dental Center’s clinical facilities are located at the Parnassus Campus, with affiliated clinics at Buchanan Dental Center and an additional presence at Mission Bay and the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or related experience / training.
- 7-9 years of progressively related experience or equivalent experience/training
- Minimum 6+ years of related experience and 5+ years of manager experience
- Broad knowledge of the legal constraints and opportunities for higher education in the State of California and through Federal programs and regulations.
- Broad knowledge of the organizational environment of higher education and large research universities to understand client priorities, issues, motivations and constraints.
- Broad knowledge of organizational processes, protocols and procedures.
- Demonstrated consulting, relationship building and strategic thinking skills.
- Proven ability to establish mission and goals at the macro-level; to lead staff to develop goals in alignment with mission.
- Proven leadership abilities to establish department goals, and motivate and influence others to achieve.
- Broad knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll.
- Demonstrated experience with and/or commitment to diversity.
- Proven ability to multi-task and meet pressing deadlines.
- Demonstrated record of successfully achieving strategic, operational and financial results.
- Proven success for driving results and instilling accountability throughout the team and organization.
- Proven collaborator and consensus builder that has a track record of successfully partnering with diverse constituencies.
- Strong writing, editing, proofreading, design skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Project management expertise.
- Advanced degree in related field preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership in planning, organizing and operating a large complex organization in an academic setting
